Tip: A bunch of ideas we have gotten so far involve the themes "mountain"/"summit", "unlike the 'rest of the Internet'", "retreat", "iceberg", "cool"... there miiiight be something behind those, but we also welcome out-of-the-box suggestions. 🙂

@Codeberg Starting with "Codeberg", I think of a Titanic/Iceberg theme. You manage all the stuff "below the water" of some creation's manifestation. There is danger if you do not respect the unseen parts.

"A code hosting service with a taste of freedom"

      or

"A code hosting service that emphasizes openness, control, and independence"

        “a heap* of ideas”

        *) mountain, stack, hill, whatever

Lots of branches on that mountain – is it an orchard or vineyard? 🤔

The first thing that people see when visiting https://codeberg.org is the following: "Software development, but free!"

However, projects hosted on Codeberg are not necessarily by developers of software—on the other hand, deciding on a new slogan can be difficult and contentious, as first impressions really matter (and there's not a lot of space there).

So, one of the people controlling the social media account decided to ask the fediverse: Any good ideas?

@zhenech one of my favourites so far! IMO it contains the three important keywords. A more active variation of it could be "share and collaborate with everyone" @Codeberg

                @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de Real suggestions:

                • Purpose: “Infrastructure to develop software on” (in chime to the OST of My Friend Pedro, “Music To Banana To”, or lofi beats to relax/study to)
                • Completeness: “Code collaboration, management, translation and preservation, tailored to how you need it!”
                • Trust: “Your code can live with us for eons.”
                • Constructivity: “A place to build projects on.”

                Joke suggestions:

                • needs tomfoolery: “autonomy, stimulation, security and connection with just one account! click here!”
                • more music tomfoolery: “when you break your code, we breakdance it all the way through”
                • time traveling: “your future self would approve of leaving your code here”
                • best read with sunglasses on: “i’m in”

There are bunch of cool ideas, but I'd rather distant myself from the word "free", because using Codeberg might be free, but maintaining it is not. So I prefer pushing towards building open culture spirit. Here are my suggestions:

                          "A Step Towards Open Culture"

"The tip of the Open Culture"

@Codeberg I think the governance is what makes Codeberg special and this phrase is my attempt to leverage the well known "free as in ___" structure to introduce what I see as a more important and robust category of freedom than the GNU four freedoms or the shallow data ownership of ATProto forges.

                                @Codeberg

My first instinct was to implement mountain/summit/peak signified, but after some thought I concluded that it would be simultaneously obvious and forced.

However, referencing the vastness and untamed nature of mountainous landscape would be more subtle:

                                "Untame your code"

                                "Your code, untamed"

                                "Code Without Limits"

                                "Open code, open horizons"

                                Or something like:

                                "Where code roams free"

The first thing that people see when visiting https://codeberg.org is the following: "Software development, but free!"

However, projects hosted on Codeberg are not necessarily by developers of software—on the other hand, deciding on a new slogan can be difficult and contentious, as first impressions really matter (and there's not a lot of space there).

So, one of the people controlling the social media account decided to ask the fediverse: Any good ideas?

Keep in mind that this is explicitly not a public vote, but rather a "call for inspiration", if we may. We'd rather avoid a Boaty McBoatface (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boaty_McBoatface) type of situation, but humorous suggestions remain nevertheless welcome! 😉

@Codeberg Shouldnt it be a more a catchy “value proposition”? Something that will tell the visitor what Codeberg is?

“Full-featured Git hosting, zero corporate strings attached.”

“Keep your code away from AI training pipelines — privacy-first hosting by a community-owned platform.”

“EU-based hosting with true data sovereignty — you can trust where your code lives.”

“Non-profit, community-driven governance — features and priorities shaped by developers, not investors.”

“No telemetry, no ads — just reliable, open-source code hosting you can depend on.”
