@richpuchalsky @futurebird AFAIK on average, programmers are against LLMs, though media bias can make it feel the opposite (just as the media was full of people saying cryptocurrency/blockchain/NFTs were the future, even though everyone I knew personally figured they weren't useful for anything). On the votes I'm aware of, most programmers are against LLMs.
For large open-source projects, I think there's also the problem of wanting to compromise with corporate interests and the handful of long-time contributors that want to use LLMs. (Plus the bit where many companies are forcing employees to use LLMs, when LLM use has been described as addictive.)
Another issue is that in media they want a two min. long story about "AI" and that's enough time to say "it's amazing and the future" or "it's bad, don't bother with it." and not much else.
But, I like technology and I want to talk for hours and hours! Nobody wants to hear that. So, gun to the head? What is the verdict?

My grandkids (13 and 10) use 'AI' as shorthand for 'garbage' art/film/writing/etc, and the same for every kid in their school.

@futurebird in my experience old people who don't understand the technology are MORE likely to be impressed and fail to understand any objections. At least my coworkers are like "I acknowledge your objections and don't care about them"

Good for them. I don't think people disdain AI because it's trendy to do so. I think it's because AI takes zero effort to make, so is synonymous with scams and stupidity.

Some older folks in my family have no idea what AI is anyway. If they see stuff that seems real, they think it is. That's a little scary.

My Gen Z kids told me, that Gen X/Boomer and older are more likely to do not recognize AI generated slop.
I am doing art and photography, so I get a strange feeling, when I see AI generated Images.
A same aged friend of mine is totally in AI and loves his "creations"
Worst are AI Voiceovers. They raise that uncanny feeling in me. brrrrrr

@desatyr @Phosphenes @rgulick @futurebird I'm GenX too (rapidly approaching 50) but I mostly work with Millennials, so I don't have a feel for what GenXers believe, but that doesn't surprise me really.

The epidemic of LLM-assisted cheating and the literal objectification of women kinda invalidates your claim about what Young People are doing with LLMs.

@veronica @Phosphenes @rgulick @futurebird my grandma thinks ai looks more realistic than reality somehow. She opposes it, saying it is done to mock God by trying to make something smarter, but always picks ai youtube videos. Scams are worse and will worsen further.

@futurebird The only people I've personally met who have bought into LLM hype at face value are boomers... and I feel like it's related to that period in the 90s where some folks called the Internet a fad and nobody wants to look that foolish again.
Altho I am starting to wonder if there will still be an Internet in a few decades.

I am stunned by the people using AI, and how they fail to validate what they get. Yes, a lot of over 60s, but several late 30s or 40s. Grew up with computers, but not necessarily especially tech savvy)(While I qualify as an old guy, I seen a enough less than accurate or relevant responses in simple on line search responses to feel I was listening to the sleazier salesmen pushing their product over a competitors version.
(I use 'salesmen' intentionally, as there were very few women in the areas I worked in, and those few were very reliable)

I’m a fan because I don’t believe AI wants anything from us.
AI doesn’t want anything from us. The companies that create and sell us AI, now that’s an entirely different story.
