These are human children, damn you, not units of production for your grey and soulless mills and offices. They should be playing, not being assessed, psychologically profiled and assigned to the optimal task to extract the maximum profit from them for your #kleptocrat masters.

This is a monstrous, abhorrent, inhuman proposal.

@simon_brooke will that mean more resources in schools to support poor or less academic students, or more stigma? Because I’m not confident it will be the former.

@Nicovel0 indeed. This sounds like just another excuse to shovel the children of the poor and disadvantaged into borstals and secondary moderns.

Just what you'd expect of New New #Labour.

@simon_brooke I wish we had something like this in Romania

          > identify children at risk of leaving education at 16 without finding a job

If you leave school early, and it's not because of vocational training, there's something wrong happening.

Romania is currently ranked no. 1 in the EU for school dropouts and absenteism, and it's a genuine societal issue at this point, with huge parts of the population functionally illiterate, suffering from adult poverty and systemic social exclusion.

EDIT: my point is that it's probably to late to correct course when the kids are at the point of leaving education, so catching it early is probably a good thing

@simon_brooke It makes me think .. "or maybe it's already happening and I am late to the party ?" ... How long will it take before someone will think to replace teachers with AI ? I heard that in certain places they are already teaching kids "how to use AI ?" .. yes it seems "we are totally loosing the idea of human factor" ( and "nature factor" as well ) .. "everything is seen under a profit/non-profit optic" .. but it's only "a materialistic profit" .

@simon_brooke There's a little snippet in the Simpsons of Bart on his first day of school, where the children are singing that song about Bingo the dog, where you clap as you sound out the letters of Bingo, and the teacher notes about Bart "Added an extra clap. Not college material." 🤨

              The Simpsons nailing it again.

@simon_brooke This is disgusting. Some of our greatest thinkers have been people who thought and acted differently from a very early age and didn’t seem to fit into the establishment. Those who may be deemed unorthodox or potential losers by some, turned out to be the smartest of the bunch. We definitely shouldn’t label kids this way, and if there are social issues, sometimes it’s the parents who are at fault.

@simon_brooke Having said that, the grim outlook for young people in the workplace has triggered a lot of anxiety in parents who want their children to be ahead in the job market. The middle classes are well ahead on this, ie at grooming kids for tertiary education and well-paying jobs. So the govt. helping out disadvantaged kids is widely seen as a useful form of "levelling up". The working class are screwed either way really.

"Its the children who are the problem."

Certainly not the entire economic base of the UK or the climate crisis or Brexit. Its the vulnerable groups who are bearing the brunt of the impacts who lack resilience.

UK Gov, a bunch of disconnected nutters.

Example, my daughter was assessed as
needing special care and very low IQ by Primary school teachers.

The biased, ignorant racist and employed for life teachers were the problem not the pupil.

She is presently doing her Masters degree in Social management, her notes are exceptional.

@budududuroiu If it's 'caught early' and responded to by providing the child with more resources, more individually tailored support, and a better learning environment, then that would be a good thing.

But that has not been what's happened in the UK in the past, and I wouldn't trust our current government to do it now.

@simon_brooke @budududuroiu I think this one sentence tells you everything you need to know: "Labour is also gearing up for a fresh tilt at welfare reform amid concerns over a spiralling benefits bill and the hit to the economy and people’s lives from a prolonged period out of work."

                            In case there's any doubt:

"Alan Milburn, who is leading a review into Britain’s crisis in youth worklessness, said he would call for sweeping changes in education policy alongside a shake-up of the benefits system to address the problem."

So basically if you're on welfare, you risk losing your payments if you have a kid with a learning disability.

Also, for fucks sake Britain, and especially Labour: Drop the Thatcherism for once.

Maybe instead of privatisation and austerity, if you tried taxing some billionaires and improving social services for once, you might actually solve some social problems.

Who knows, you might even ward off fascism.
