@ryan I was thinking of some magic Fediverse bot that tells you to log off and go to bed at your own personal midnight, when the clock strikes midnight wherever you personally are tooting from. But I like your idea better. I like the thought of the Fediverse telling mutuals in Nepal, in New Zealand, in Alaska, in Japan, in Nigeria, to go to bed at my Danish midnight, regardless of what time it is for them. 'WELL. RESTED.' Yes

@Devils_Rancher @adamrice Most national anthems benefit from not being sung in their entirety. The US national anthem does seem to get sung rather a lot compared to many other countries, where you'd mostly only hear it at sports events where a national team or sportsperson is officially representing the country in an international competition.

@ryan That has never struck me, that time-specific events like the Times Square New Year's countdown aren't broadcast at staggered intervals according to the different time zones in the same country, but live, and thus at the wrong time for many.

@ryan Remote and international work does bring its own time-zone challenges. I'm reminded now of people travelling in the 80s and 90s, when you couldn't just look it up, trying to remember the time difference so that they didn't wake their parents at 3 am when they made that expensive, rare telephone-box phone call home.

A Fediverse bot that posts a GIF at 10 minutes to midnight of your server administrator saying "Time now, everybody - last toots at the bar." At 5 minutes to midnight, Eugen flashes the lights. At midnight, Mastodon plays your national anthem. You stand. You finish singing the last line with a little cheer and go to bed. Your home timeline transmits the Test Card. The Fediverse will resume transmission at 0600 hours. Even the reply guys will come back well-rested.
@CiaraNi Only if there is a corresponding instance for night shift workers that goes ota between 0900-1500.
Otherwise it's just more day shift privilege.

@SnelsetterFarm A great point. It reminds me of the uneasiness I feel when I reference Monday as being a pain in the arse, the back-to-work day that ends a weekend off. Because I know that many (me included, in the past) work weekends and nights and shifts. Or don't have work when they would like to. A simple Weekday Work/Weekend Off routine is a privilege.
So agreed. It'd be ideal if the Fediverse End of Transmission bot worked at each of our personal midnights in our own zones and patterns.

@Devils_Rancher I think many, if not most, national anthems are jingoistic and bellicose, so it fits in that sense. Maybe that's what we need to fix the mess the world is in - every country changes its national anthem to whale song with blackbirds doing backing vocals while a stream ripples by.

@ryan The 6pm - 9pm window seems to be a sensible attempt to make things like that accessible to as many as possible. I assume all countries with multiple time zones do similar - Brazil, Australia, Canada etc.

@Devils_Rancher Agreed, yikes, no, not that as a Mastodon end-of-tranmission message. I'm hoping for something more Fediversy. If it weren't so catchy and loud, I'd suggest the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore, because I bet there are people in the Fediverse who make their own anvils and hammers. And others who use them to smithy their own repair café tools. And others who compose arrangements and others who know how to play them.

@timtfj Maybe we need a Fedi-anthem. Three Blind Mice-like anthems mightn't be that bad. Easily played on home-made tin whistles and wooden recorders hand-crafted by the brilliant makers in the Fediverse.
