@prism If the law held Microsoft liable, they'd have an incentive to send email requesting permission to delete specific files. They'd have even more incentive to not give free OneDrive access to Windows users in the first place.
@Corb_The_Lesser Yes but we all know that law is there to serve the corporations not the other way around.

I'm more upset than I've been in a while.
Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
@prism Back when I had a job, I had to fight Onedrive so often. I never never wanted to use it bc of exactly this scenario. I hoped my other coworkers were just as cautious about using it as I was
OneDrive is a fuckin disaster

@Corb_The_Lesser Yes but we all know that law is there to serve the corporations not the other way around.
@prism Right. You can't install, use, or update commercial software without agreeing to the original or revised terms of the license you've bought. Companies can change the rules at will.

@prism It's too late now and i'm sorry for your loss, but this is probably the number 1 reason that people much smarter than me have found semi unofficial ways to bypass the Microsoft account requirement during windows first time setup and why people like myself keep demanding it's put back in the OOBE as an official option.
If you bypass the account requirement then windows puts your files where they are supposed to be and doesn't activate onedrive "integration".

@prism To be clear, I don't expect you to know that, you shouldn't have to know that, it shouldn't be a miracle to have an OS that does the literal one job it's fucking designed to do properly.

@shad0wdragon Yes if only I had known when installing windows ten years ago that ten years later Microsoft would decide to delete my most valuable files for fun, I could have done something to prevent it. Alas.

@prism Yeah. Fuck microsoft. An operating system should be a tool to it's user that manages your hardware, manages your files, and manages your apps with an easy to use and accessible interface and that's all it should do. It should not be a tool to microsoft for advertising, data mining, and making you a slave to microsoft cloud services lest they delete everything without warning
-
@prism This is why you should stop the backup before you sign out, and for each folder, choose to keep the files on the pc when you are stopping it. Works for me every time. If i forget to do this I can sign back in and fix it without much trouble usually since i do it when I run a new install for the first time while I'm installing things and setting stuff up.

I'm not going to defend Microsoft, this is on you.If those files are really important for you, why didn't you have a backup?
And Microsoft doesn't just delete files from the cloud. You either have to delete your account or delete them yourself. Logging off OneDrive doesn't do that either.

@prism but obviously MS back's up their stuff they would never lose data and just tell a customer "to bad, so sad" you should have backed it up......

https://www.theregister.com/saas/2026/09/28/microsoft-tells-nonprofits-their-deleted-m365-data-isnt-coming-back/5299433@bosconet I was backing it up. To one drive. The worst thing that should have happened is they deleted the backup. They removed the files from my computer without my knowledge or consent.

@wpeckham I don't have that option. Accessibility on linux is a trash fire.

I was backing them up. To OneDrive.

I'm wrong. You're right. Happy?BTW:
I don't use any Microsoft product or service. I'm full in on Apple. All my files are in iCloud, which also saves most of them only in the cloud. Never lost any file. Why? Backups (eg. BackBlaze and external drive). And now, I wish you both a nice day.
