    RSS never tracked you.
    Email never throttled you.
    Blogs never begged for dopamine.
    The old web wasn’t perfect.
    But it was yours.

@Daojoan is it really the old web? What's the new Web then?

I'd argue that the same proponents that label these technologies old, are the same ones trying to break the Web and other open standards. RSS, Email, blogs and other internet technologies are still the current open internet. We never had successors to them.

@Daojoan Totally feel this. The old web had soul—messy, personal, and real. You made your corner, shared what mattered, and no one was chasing likes. It wasn’t perfect, but it felt human. Maybe it’s time we reclaim a bit of that.

@neuhaus true, and I'm old enough to remember when every blog used feedburner for their RSS-feeds. Still, the web was funnier and in a sense better back then hehe @Daojoan

I still use RSS to track YouTube channels and podcast episodes at home, and a couple news outlets at work.
YouTube will block you if you set up an automated refresh, so you do have to refresh that particular feed manually, but it works fine otherwise. Even loads shorts as normal videos, which is a much better experience.

@Daojoan back then the only tracker was a php-generated image counting the number of visitors and incrementing it on every new session, and it was awesome

@Daojoan Yep, I've noticed that lately I've been regressing my tech a bit, and it feels great. Also, old models with new tooling makes for a better experience, as long as that tooling isn't made by the corps that got us in the current mess.

When we solve older tech's problem with today's capabilities, older tech becomes better and more useful. This is what I do, too.

@Daojoan I miss Google Reader and other tools. I stillm blog. I was tired of having my time wasted on purpose by Twitter, FB, and other sites. Now I blog daily. I have for months. I reverted to my old habit during the pandemic when social media became unpleasant.

@Daojoan Yes, this! This is why I stopped writing on Medium and started focusing on my own blog, on my own domain. Email is also my preferred way of communication. Email, however, could probably benefit from a more modernised protocol.

I can't confirm this, but I do get a sense people are "moving back" to their own spaces on the web. Perhaps I'm wrong. But I actually much rather read and follow your blog on your domain than follow you on a big platform.

@denzilferreira @martin_ueding @patrick_h_lauke @Daojoan I use Plausible - because it respects your privacy and you can self host if you want to.
