Do Not Talk To Me About "AI"
I had some cards printed up.
These are unlikely to change any minds, but they will defintely shorten some incredibly tedious conversations at the bar.
Here's a PDF if you'd like some of your own.

Need to cook up some or my own that say things along the line of "if I ever had respect for you, that has past", or "you having goven me carte blance to rant about AI at you for 30 minutes straight", or "you sound gullible, and if you don't think AI is a bubble, I have some tulip bulb futures to srll you"

https://jwz.org/b/yk-o@jwz It's like demonizing MySQL app, maybe it runs at some datacenter, and it can do video editing too. It's actually not much useful application if you notice it just takes wiki pages and
google links at face value. -

@SDRHoernchen the card would be useful for people who arent worth arguing with like double digit IQ people but to say that not taking a hard stance against something makes you dumb or whatever like probably how some people here see me is weird. i hate ai as well, but there are unchangeable things that can be managed. what is the solution? destroy all copies of ai on the internet? destroy gguf files on everyones computer? copyright was broken anyway, finding some small use is ok.
@curltoes I suspect quite a few people are overwhelmed by the whole topic which spans geopolitical questions, like superpowers pursuing nuclear weapons once did, to smaller scale but not less important question, like how am I going to earn any money if "AI takes over", so they just decide to hide behind their hands (or flashy cards) like a child. The one sure way not to shape any kind of policy...
-
@jwz Probably should specify wtf you mean by ai.

@jwz I've run an offline llm on my computer. I've programmed response logic for enemies in games and played chess and other games aganst a computer. I've used text and image recognition and benefitted from an image cropping tool guessing where I wanted to crop to.
The demand for newer local models means the corporations behind them have to waste datacenter resources training them in the first place, just for chess, some memes and to crop images.
>that's ALL I use it for
Considering the planet is literally dying to train these models, that ain't a great flex.

@twigpi so... you're ignoring all of the problems with the technology, and trying to negotiate what level of harm to others that you find acceptable for your personal, selfish benefit? like the cards in the post say? gee

https://jwz.org/b/yk-o@jwz Ai's are going to become the biggest waste ever. China will be making a box versions of them all within 20 years, when particle memory is achieved.

@Eetschrijver @jwz vas-y, et n'oublie pas de partager s.t.p.

@atax1a Nope, just calling you out on your ignorance.

@twigpi Can you point to the place in this post that made you think that I would be even remotely interested in this anecdote?

Propz 4 the text on these cards and 4 the sentiment that it expresses. -

@curltoes @SDRHoernchen "these mass graves make for very flat ground, might as well put up apartments" is all I'm hearing.

@jwz Attended a wedding yesterday. Met an old friend who was like «So, I am currently experiencing a lot with making AI music. I have to ask you as a composer how you feel about this?» I could only facepalm as loudly as possible and ask if we could please, PLEASE talk about something else. Weddings are supposed to be happy! Wish I had this card.
@eirikmyhr @jwz
Gah. I was at a human composed opera a while ago and was similarly taken aback:

@twigpi @jwz You are knowingly mixing up LLMs (which are impossible to train locally and without breaking consent/copyright by using half of internet for training, even if already trained model is possible to be run locally), non-ML algorithms (which are not what people are talking about when mentioning AI, nobody is like, angry at Akinator for being "AI", because expert systems aren't related to any of "Generative AI" issues), and a simpler neural network that can be realistically made at home and doesn't output training data in any way (though modern incarnation of it is usually mixed up with LLMs and used for surveillance)
