It’s galling that tech billionaires tell us that letting them destroy the climate to develop AI will allow AI to tell us (somehow? maybe? probably?) how to fix climate change. And even more frustrating that news outlets report this blather without so much as a wrinkled eyebrow.
MY DUDES WE ALREADY KNOW HOW TO FIX CLIMATE CHANGE. We stop spewing carbon into the air; install solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and other renewable energy generation; build mass amounts of efficient public transit; and stop funding industries that dig fossil fuels out of the ground.
AND WE STOP DOING AI.
We already know how to fix climate change, and we aren’t doing it. Even if some superintelligent chatbot COULD figure out how to fix the problem after we turn our world into an absolute oven, it’s bold to assume we would listen to good advice then, because we (including techbros, ESPECIALLY techbros) aren’t even listening to good advice TODAY.
These people are tedious liars and scam artists.
@drahardja Precisely!!!

@drahardja Yes, that they're telling us they have the solution though the solution has long existed means we have no reason to believe them. They're going to kill millions and displace billions in order to solve the problem they're making worse with the thing they're trying to make.
That's not rational, that's genocidal thinking, evil even. It's placing a bet on the security of the planet and every living thing on it on the chance of creating an intelligence that may fix everything. Hubris may cause their downfalls but they seem certain that if they do they'll destroy everything on the way down.

@drahardja
Tech billionaires will tell us anything they think will shut up our protest at what they're doing so that they can merrily carry on making those billions. Unbothered by us mere plebs.
We need a new word for tech billionaires. Tech billies? Tech bro robber barons?
What was it that Bezos said? If he got taxed more it wouldn't mean that a NY teacher would earn any more.
Very tedious liars and utter and total scam artists.
I say we need to tax the crap out of them.

@drahardja We also already know how to feed people, provide inspiring education, and democratize healthcare, housing, and transportation.

@drahardja @Gargron I totally agree with 90% of this. We need to switch to clean, renewable power as quickly as possible.
But “stop doing AI” is a pipe dream. It’s like telling Ford to “stop doing cars” in 1930.
AI, like cars, has benefits as well as major environmental drawbacks. A realistic goal is to get AI to a point where it is heavily regulated and doesn’t take massive data centers and enormous resources to be useful, and I think that’s possible in a very short time if we elect the right people.

@jimmylittle @drahardja Nonsense. “Stop using asbestos”, “stop using lead”, “stop using CFCs” have largely worked, the idea that AI is inevitable is nothing but big tech propaganda.

@drahardja I'm very frustrated by this kind of argument, because to my mind, human beings showed no sign of controlling climate before AI.
Perhaps it's especially galling to me because I am an American and I have seen our President roll back mitigations and even pay penalties to stop windmills from going in.
In this environment, the AI delta is unsurprising.

@drahardja This is probably also worth citing for perspective
