I wonder how many people have been fingerprinted, or rather, how many have never been fingerprinted? I have been for both good and bad reasons. I’m totally in the system. Are there large numbers of people who could actually be somewhat anonymous? I find that interesting.

@dtm collected at the airport by immigration. I forgot which country! Might have been Phillippines?

@dtm I was tricked into doing it as a kid anyway, but the only reason I ever had to do it as an adult was because I did substitute teaching for extra money (I'm technically still in the system but too busy with my day job to do it).

@dtm @Unlikelylass I got fingerprinted as a kid because my mom bought into the scary criminals might try to abduct me trope.

@dtm If you haven't been fingerprinted, you've most likely been footprinted. 90% of hospitals still take footprints of newborns today. Chances are, if you were born from the 1960's on, you were foot-printed as a baby.
This was done to aid in the investigation of missing children or kidnappings. Some mother's were fingerprinted at the same time as their baby's footprinting.
And of course the nostalgic keepsake from that amazing day.

@Nead Yes, this is certainly true, but there are not really any databases for footprints.

@dtm personally I'd be interested to be recorded again. I have been fingerprinted but in that time due to work place hazard and allergies my hands have been burnt and scared quite substantially. Be interesting if there has been any change. I know that fingerprints grow back to how they originally were usually but we are talking grabbing tungstan lamps that have just blown and not had enough time to cool. (Yes I was wearing gloves. No that didnt help.)

@dtm A European here, had to be fingerprinted to get a passport. When they started that, it was ’it’s only stored on the passport’, but quickly it became ’it’s stored on a server but not used by the police’, and obviously very soon the police was ’can we please use the fingerprint database even though everybody promised at first that it wouldn’t be given to use’.

So. Not happy but I still like having a passport, and an ID card. (That one also requires fingerprints.)
