@baldur It's frustrating to watch otherwise capable journalists interview actual independent AI experts and just pivoting from one misunderstanding to another on the opposite side of what the expert actually just said, and them then giving up to explain it, the end message being, no matter how you twist and turn it, the viewer doesn't need to act.
Similar with climate change.
J: "Are we doomed?"
E: "If we don't work hard against it, yes."
J: "Oh, so we're safe."
E: "..."It always happens when a journalist interviews some real expert about something complex the journalist has no clue about, or when expecting a given answer and getting the exactly opposite. The mix of cognitive dissonance and trying to shoehorn the answer in the preconceived mold is usually a mix of hilarious and weird. Pure incompetence showing. Specialization in journalism is a need, not an extra.

AI could kill us all in its current state.
It only needs somebody to give it access to the wrong system and seriously threatening the AI if it doesn't get the required goals. That will force the AI to make the most outrageous things in order to get them. Why not launching the ICBMs or killing somebody, when the alternative is the sun exploding?
Fun fact: AI courses recommend threatening the AI in your prompts, because it is supposed to make the output better. That's wrong, BTW.

@baldur you're right, but the media (news media in particular) doesn't exist to investigate or be a mediator between the few and the many anymore. it used to be that. but not anymore.
news media is simply a megaphone, they hear something from someone, and then they simply amplify it to the rest of us. that's pretty much it. that's their purpose.

Why? Without safeguarding it, surely it’s a logical conclusion. We make a super intelligence, it does things governments don’t like, or decides it will run things better, what’s stoping it causing devastation?

A way dumber real one can kill us way faster. AI will magnify incompetence at the heart of IT, load bearing systems will collapse, people capable of fixing things will not be called in until it’s too late.
You don’t need superintelligence, a greedy stupidity will do just fine.

I suppose those with heavy minds a mea culpa in the privacy of ones home (no different than posting on social media - but that's a longer discussion and best served in context) fear eradication or even worse you could be a pariah and canceled!
2000 years of humanity fed in a the greatest pattern recognition system. Spewing generational morality discussion back at us. We're not so complex.
