Own goal of the century:
British singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran's Loop tour boots American rapper Macklemore, after Macklemore condemns Israel's genocide in Gaza.
Result:
American singer Fineas quits the Loop tour.
Dublin singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe quits.
Danish pop singer Lucas Graham quits.
Ed Sheeran's own backing band Beoga quits.
The tour was supposed to continue until December, but all that is left is Ed Sheeran and the support for Israel's genocide.
@randahl again someone who falls from grace
-
@randahl The real winners here are the lawyers for the tour promoter.
They are going to generate many, many billable hours by suing everyone who breaks their tour contracts.
Everyone else will lose money here - the promoter, the musicians, the road crews, the fans. But the lawyers will have a great Christmas.
@grumble209 @randahl
A power move would be for the musicians to say that okay, we're forced to play so we play.And then perform exactly as well as you would expect when you're forced against your will by the lead act and their lawyers. While making clear to the audience they're there against their will.

@randahl I just read a Dutch article in which he claims that the organisers of the tour and the concert venues are to blame, and he (Ed) tried to build bridges for that.
Best thing he can do, I think, is just bail out and cancel the whole thing. -

@paulk he needs to make sure that his tour has a legal framework that prevents political censorship.
@randahl @paulk Sheeran’s statement on this was awful - a total cop out, doubling down on his desire to remain apolitical. Just terrible all around, considering we are dealing with a genocide.
Please look up statements by the bands that dropped out - they restored my faith in humanity.
Fuck Sheeran forever and ever (and I never say the F word, but damn)

@randahl he may have to tour with Pink and Kanye West now

@jannem @randahl I'd be surprised if new acts and a new backing band aren't already on planes. They just need a good drummer, and soloists who can learn their parts - everything else is likely already on a click track. Any pros they hire will learn the rest in a week.
Sheeran's website still has tickets on sale for this weekend. They might cancel one city, but they'll have a show next week - there's too much money at stake to not hire replacements.

@FrancoisPrague Pink? How is she in the Kanye camp?
-
@FrancoisPrague Pink? How is she in the Kanye camp?
@randahl well Kanye toured the same stadium as Sheeran without any backlash from the stadium owner… I do not mean West and Pink are ideologically bound. Just they both have narratives the stadium owner is willing to accept in his stadium.

@FrancoisPrague Pink? How is she in the Kanye camp?
#Pink deserves to be mentioned because it was Pink who triggered this entire drama. it was her who brought to the recent forefront criticism of #Macklemore for his support for #Palestine, he has been doing this on stage for years
also: she claims to be defending Jews. this isn't about Jews or antisemitism, it's about #Israel's actions
and I don't know when this world will finally understand the radioactively obvious fucking difference

@randahl well that went well for him didn't it? Sorry I can't boycott him as I've always thought his music was insipid detritus.

@FrancoisPrague @randahl they could add Kid Rock and The Disturbed on. Imagine the tour album collection? It would literally sell tens of copies!

@benroyce @randahl @FrancoisPrague that’s the point: it’s about calling a crime a crime. This whole “you’re just saying it because I’m <you name it>” is so exhausting.

@randahl what a turnaround. I just read Macklemore’s statement which was very well put and which is a great example of critique with leaving the door open for change.

@randahl I wasn't aware of Ed's support for Israeli nonsense. I shall do my part and remove him from all playlists.

Who in their right mind support that state?!

-
@benroyce @randahl @FrancoisPrague yes, I am with you there. Antisemitism is becoming stronger every day, which makes it harder to distinguish who is actually concerned about war crimes or just being antisemitic or a racist.

@lordkhan @randahl @FrancoisPrague
yes, #antisemitism is on the rise in the world
so we talk about it and we oppose it
we *also* talk about and we oppose #Israel's genocidal actions
we do both
and those are completely unrelated, uncrossed topics
except in the words of complete idiots and manipulative liars
