In 2025, an UN report revealed: "data centres consumed enough water to fill 1.8 million Olympic-sized pools. If the water were redirected to Africa, it would meet the basic domestic needs of more than 600 million people each year. By 2030, the UN report estimates that AI could use as much water as 1.3 billion people."

In 2020, AI basically didn't exist.

So, in 5 years its thirst became as large as that of 600 million people.

How much water will AI demand in 2040?

The problem with allowing massive accumulation of wealth. The resulting god complexes destroy community critical resources on a thoughtless whim.

@gerrymcgovern I think you have to go back to 2005, because Google and Facebook (and later Microsoft and Amazon, and then Netflix etc etc) are responsible for a lot of data centers, so it's not just AI (though that is making it go exponential). 🥵

@gerrymcgovern Assuming a depth of 2 metres (minimum depth), 1.8 million "Olympic-sized swimming pools" are 4.5 billion cubic metres of waters, enough water to provide drinking water for 10 billion people for 280 days (assuming 2 litres per person).

If these are 3 meter pools it's enough for a year.

It simply is not sustainable and it’s all life vs. a moment of AI, because AI will also die with us.

And so many are drinking the kool-aid.
