Great news: in the 5 years 2020-2024, know how many 20-24 year olds died of cervical cancer in England?
ZERO.
That's the first cohort of folks that age who were offered the HPV vaccine when they were 12 or 13.
Before the vaccine was used, on average about 20 people in that age range died of cervical cancer in a 5 year span.
We're looking forward to more dramatic results as that group enters their 30s & 40s.

@jeneralist I can't find any reference to which vaccine we're talking about here, is it gardasil 9 or a newer, better one?
(I knew someone who had pre-cancerous lesions from one of the much rarer HPV strains against which gardasil 9 doesn't safeguard)

@jeneralist That's great! I've got to go read the research. (I wonder if it also compares against unvaccinated 20-24 year olds in the same time period, or maybe if they wouldn't have enough data.)

@poleguy @jeneralist The study looked at deaths recorded in the National Disease Registration Service, which includes population-level data for the country. Having 90% vaccination coverage seems to be enough to curb transmission and cover the remaining 10% by herd immunity. Obviously it's best to get the rate as high as possible, but these results are pretty incredible. Hopefully the numbers hold up as this cohort ages.

@poleguy @jeneralist The results are so significant they don't even allow for a comparison study. Because there were zero deaths total in this period, there is nothing to compare.
