But I think it does "send a message" that "current and former enemies" were now front-and-center in our future drive to explore the universe.

@cyberlyra @theleftistlawyer I like Star Trek, but my Orville knowledge is more complete (it's also a mere three seasons heh). This reminds me of one of my favorite moments in the series, and I've been thinking about it a lot lately. "You get all this by becoming better people."

@lxskllr @cyberlyra @theleftistlawyer It's one of the only bits of sci-fi media I've seen in a long time that makes me feel any sort of hope for humanity. Definitely worth a rewatch (or two). :3

@theleftistlawyer That is confusing as Star Trek has always been a very progressive show. As in decades ahead of its time culturally. Probably more than the average SciFi show.
If conservatives want a relatively conservative show, I think Babylon 5 might be in their orbit.
I was going to recommend Firefly / Serenity, but it’s too libertarian & diverse for their taste!

Fakers who whine about what ST used to be never watched the show, and probably just got their tired schtick from every 90s standup that no one remembers today, even while they're trying to work their old bits into their chats with the working comedians they drive to the airport, to post to the Tiktoxic later.

Seriously. Everyone at NASA I worked with loved Star Trek and was working towards that kind of future. They recognized the problems and challenges, but they really believed that future.
Although people in the commercial tech industry love to trot out sci fi references as if it's some kind of credential, they consistently get it wrong, making the dystopian stuff come true instead.
You just cannot get to The Federation by building SkyNet. It's not possible.

I remember fondly when Counselor Troi identified a living descendant of one of the survivors of a cryonics mishap and I was blown away by her ability to do that without encountering paywalls. The future we want is open source, including open data.

@jadebees @theleftistlawyer They can’t mess with it too much for fear of losing their entire built in audience. We will see a dark age of Star Trek shows that don’t get too political and downplay anything about diversity and “empathy” but hopefully once the orange one is dead or in prison things will go back to normal.
