This is the funniest news story I have read this week.
Ukraine has a legal team that seeks reimbursement for assets stolen by Russia, when Putin invaded Crimea. Through european courts they are seize anything Russian of value.
Recently, the expensive Russian weather monitoring vessel Professor Molchanov came into Norwegian waters, so Norway seized the ship at Svalbard, and sent its 69 sailors home to Russia.
The ship will now be handed over to Ukraine.
Enjoy, Vlad!

@randahl More funny when you realize that "Russian weather monitoring vessel" is a diplomatic name for "Russian spy vessel". I imagine lots of good electronic spy stuff inside as a bonus. Also, a strong message from Norway. After that I doubt Russia will try the same provocations with drones, like they are doing in Moldova and Baltic region.
-
@hajovonta @randahl Putin is welcome to come to The Hague and argue the case
@768kb @hajovonta @randahl
We do have nice accommodations for him too... -
@hajovonta @randahl I hate to say this but, So? The Russian sailors were sent home, nobody was hurt and Ukraine gets a ship. Perfect. Is Russia supposed to have more rights than the country it attacks? And what's Russia going to do? The more other countries do such things, the less power Russia has.
@Mimsybean
I get your point, but it is not compatible with the rule of law. -
@hajovonta @randahl You are right with your regard to Russian vessels following the Norwegian law. I think the point here was that this is not a Russian vessel. It was seized and will now be returned to Ukraine, whom it belonged to in the first place.

@randahl thank you for the very good news to start my day

-
@hajovonta @randahl Yes, seems like you are right about the ownership.
It was seized though, on behalf of Naftogaz, as Randahl described in this post.
Russia will probably object to anything "bad" thats happening to them (caused by themself)
-
@randahl
A Russian civilian vessel may legally sail to Svalbard if it follows Norwegian law and the Svalbard Treaty framework. But Russia does not have a legal right to sail military forces in for coercive purposes, seize territory, or disregard Norwegian jurisdiction.I think there is chance Norway violated the treaty here.
@hajovonta @randahl Those are two different things. It can legally sail to Svalbard, but that does not make it immune to legal seizure. The same way that a Russian citizen is allowed to settle on Svalbard without a visa, but that doesn't mean a Norwegian court can't hold them accountable for their debts.

Wouldn't this incentivize Russia to boobytrap their ships as weapons against Ukraine?

Except that there is a catch : this is the execution of a decision of a Norwegian court at the request of Ukraine.
Oh and the vessel has capacity for 56 people but 69 people return to Murmansk ( or Moscow )
Me thinks that the SVR was/is very active on the island.

@Mimsybean
I get your point, but it is not compatible with the rule of law.@hajovonta @randahl I understand that, but when dealing with a criminal that is in the process of committing the crime, one has to do all one can to make that criminal activity as difficult as possible. Again, nobody was hurt and Ukraine got a ship. Illegally, perhaps but it is not a precedent for such criminal activity against any other countries. Besides, has Russia not been sending spy ships in disguise in foreign waters?
