Over on Whatever today, I'm talking about "AI" and creativity and how, when it comes to learning creative skills, Generative "AI" is rather like the old "Guitar Hero" game, i.e., a really fun way not to actually learn how to do a creative thing:

@scalzi Hey, guitar hero is great for developing rhythm

@scalzi You are right about Guitar Hero and guitar playing, but the drum version could actually help a beginner learn drums.

@scalzi One of my biggest gripe with most rhythm games is that usually the inputs they have you do don't have any meaning musically and don't really have any compelling gameplay that can stand on it's own.
Guitar hero is basically just pushing random buttons that don't mean anything while there's music going on. That neither has much value musically nor does it have much value as a game outside of that.

@scalzi Though that's not true for all such types of games. Trombone Champ for example isn't like playing an actual trombone at all, but it has you actually meaningfully interact with the music in such a way that the game itself could meaningfully be counted as a musical instrument.
And even a game like Rhythm Doctor that's literally just one single button has meaningful musical interaction because it does some extremely wild stuff with rhythm and audio cues.

@scalzi Though judging a rhythm game by it's creative value is kind of missing the point because usually they're not meant as an expressive, creative outlet in the first place, they're an athletic one.
Playing guitar hero won't teach you guitar but but also I don't think anyone interested in it would ever approach it expecting it did.
That said though, for a lot of rhythm games, creating custom charts or maps is a legitimate creative endeavor even if playing them isn't nearly as much.

@scalzi I couldn’t explain it any better.
