It’s equal parts invigorating and depressing to watch Mamdani’s progress. It’s like, all those things they claimed “can’t be done” or “are too hard/impossible” actually are doable. Which means that all the other politicians are not doing them as a *choice*. Which I kind of knew already but Mamdani draws a line under it.

@dx Following Adams as he has, it's not drawing a line--it's six-foot high letters of blinking neon.

Although I suppose part of that $12 billion deficit was attributable to the incompetence/corruption of the Adams administration and anybody could have done (some of) it.

@dx Expect a lot of "news" organizations to stop reporting on his successes for fear their core audience will like what he's doing.

@dx on the bright side, it does also mean that their excuse is gone and they're gonna have to come up with better reasons for people to vote for them anyway 🤷

              Established free childcare for 2-year-olds.
Targeted junk fees and subscription traps.
Announced new rec centers, youth clinics, and early childhood education centers.
Developed new bike and bus lanes across the city.
Invested $50 million in park improvements.
Created a new Office of Community Safety and the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, which has already won over $34 million on behalf of tenants and secured repairs at over 6,000 apartments across the city.
Launched “rental ripoff hearings” to provide tenants an opportunity to register complaints with city officials.
              Filled 100,000 potholes.
Established a program to quickly remove unnecessary sidewalk scaffolding.
Secured a wealth tax on luxury second homes.
Cut hundreds of millions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse.
Closed an inherited $12 billion budget deficit to deliver a balanced city budget.

And he's after establishing 5 city-owned grocery stores - now *that* will be interesting to monitor. What will they stock? How will they perform financially? Will they be subsidized?
I ask, because that idea inspired Avi Lewis to want to do it nationally in Canada.

@dx hit the nail on the head. "This things can't be done, budget, blah blah blah political clout blah support blah blah" and here this dude is, just doing it. Proving that it was doable all along, just nobody cared to make the system work for us.

@dx I'm going through some to see how things were done. Gaining a half billion in taxes from absentee owners is straight forward enough. I don't know how many potholes are normally filled each Spring - things like that. I looked at the deficit being made up. A good chunk came as a donation from the state. Another part is being  made up from *not* paying into the pension funds, but delaying the payments, which is really just kicking the can down the road to future taxpayers in two years. The tenancy and consumer laws seem a done thing. If there are any major injuries, the scaffolding thing might come back to bite.
We'll just have to see. Looks like a very good beginning for NY.
Now that woman the article I linked  is contrasting him with - horrible!
But, again, who knows how cherry picked either list is.
@trebach may have some idea though.

Exactly. We could have universal healthcare for us, right now, not our grand kids and great grand kids. But people's brains are saddled with so much conservative bullshit that they just won't let drop to the ground.

It took Trump going through our economy and democracy like a wrecking ball for people to finally start waking up even the slightest amount to how crazy things have become since Nixon/Reagan kicked off the neoliberal project.

@contrasocial @dx and just to preempt anyone saying that "it doesn't work at the scale of a country as big the US" which is the go to excuse when they run out of bad faith arguments:
Brazil, a country with much lower GDP and fewer resources in general, but with nearly as much population and territory as the US, has universal healthcare.
