    ...but what about someone (like me?) who just likes to see other real humans in the same real world?

    I've done "home-office" looong before that even became an official term. I wouldn't object remote work (love it) - but I also feel that seeing and meeting co-workers *for real* keeps me mentally happy, more productive and I enjoy my "together in the office" days! ⭐️

    I'm the same. But the answer to your question is easy:

    This says nothing about peoples own preferences, it only talks about what they demand of others. Everyone has different preferences, and we should respect that. This is about managers who don't respect that, because of their own egos.

                  This reminds me of David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs. I believe he names the desire of managers to have as many working *under them* as possible as one of the reasons for the preponderance of bullshit jobs. As an example of the inefficiencies of capitalism / why we don't work 30h/week.

                      Like some fucking art piece or something.

                      I was going to take the job too thinking, "I work better at home, but if they want to pay me to be pretty that's fine too." They ended up being raging fucking assholes though and I was actually surprised 😛

                              @p3ter @Natasha_Jay It should be completely voluntary.

                              What I experienced when it was, before the RTO mandate, was that the 10% of extroverts that actually went into the office kept complaining that "the office was so empty", giving an excuse to the narcissist(s) at the top to argue morale was low (it wasn't for 90% of the workforce), productivity was down (it was up 25%) and force everyone back.

                                Not at all surprised. I worked in local government and the responses to the pandemic and later RTO varied widely between office and organizations. After a while you got a feel for which areas had a dysfunctional culture/leadership. Very much driven by the top.

                                  I wish I had been able to post the link to this study in the all-staff Slack channel right before my last day at work.

                                  The president of the company, daughter of the founder, had ordered everyone back to office in late 2021.

                                  Employees mostly worked in cubicles. I wore a mask all day. Her spacious office with a view was located down a hall, away from contagious employees.

                                    @Natasha_Jay I have an employee that is a desktop support technician, he fixes your laptop when you bring it in, it’s not a role that can be done remotely. We have 100’s of employees that work in the field or remotely, but they need a place to bring their tech when they need help. Does that make me a narcissist?

                                      I once worked on a project at SAC trying to eliminate tennis shoe transfers between machines back in the day. The generals were against it because they didn't want to lose their commands over the people who did the tape transfers.
