@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems oh yeah, tinfoil on windows is ridicoulusly good if you don't care about the light or looking weird from outside

@whitequark They used this method to cool the Artemis space capsule in the recent mission with a live crew. Science!

@whitequark I wish i could get reflective Venetian blinds. That would be better than my dull white. But the style is common up here.

They are mounted behind the outer protective, non sealed, pane of glass in the window. Behind that is a double pane of sealed glass.

The space blanket is a lot better at sealing thou.

@whitequark cool. Did you tape them on the inside or to the outside?

we use a reflective sheet inside which helps a lot but gets the glass pretty hot, I'm curious if putting space blankets on the outside would make a meaningful difference for those really warm periods.

@whreq ouch! I'm aware of the risk, but understood it mainly happens when the window is unevenly heated, and it's pretty uniform in my case. Or perhaps I've just been lucky.

Good extra reason to experiment with putting the foil outside!

@jamesmunns.com @whitequark Came here to say this. My window cracked because I thought I was being clever saving energy, helping the environment, and keeping my lab cooler. All I really did was feed money to the window installers 😕

@whitequark classic student trick where I come from. Heat and light kept outside, the light from monitors is sufficient 😅

@whitequark i have been informed that "slanket" is instead a sleeved blanket for the opposite weather

i guess this will have to be a splanket
