    @falcennial As many people said: This question is badly worded!

    "chat" as in having a casual conversation: Never

    "chat" as in using it as a tool for work: Several times per month

    @Quantium40 @falcennial

    Same. I think a lot of people who answer "not at all" consider it a tool and use it accordingly. I don't chat with Excel, I give it instructions. Same with LLMs. But I use them sparingly.

      @falcennial I voted a few times a month - however it is closer to a few times a year, but if you count Google or Bing searches, that's several times a day. I'm trying other search engines but they are not as good. Any suggestion is welcome

        @falcennial thanks for doing this.

        It’s very hard to phrase a poll like this so that there is no ambiguity.

        I suggest to people asking “what do you mean” or “does chat mean…X” to just vote with what feels closest.

        Fwiw, I feel the poll is quite a lot about a general disposition, more than it is about precision

        @urlyman what a compliment! Jonathan, you've made my day.

        I agree with your advice. when polling stuff my rules for my conduct are:
        1. it's a learning exercise, not a judgement exercise. judgement precludes honesty, so no judging in the thread.
        2. trust is essential. trust others to be honest, generous, fair, curious, open, and cool.
        3. we each define things our own way. the only way they get used is for us each to use them.
        4. people who boost polls are lovers of learning, and I adore them! 🤌

          @falcennial multiple times a week, only for coding related questions when I don't find anything useful after using search engines.

            @urlyman woops, how could I forget: all credit for this reprisal (and all future ones in this vein) goes to @jesuisatire whose idea it was to track behaviour over time by doing it every 3 months.

                I agree with some comments about defining the question, but that's the usual problem with a poll. If you tried to define it thoroughly, the question would be too long (and still not cover all possibilities).

                It's interesting that some responders define "chat" as voice only. Chat was always any medium, and "chatroom" was a popular term for online discussion groups. Perhaps some commenters are too young to remember. I feel old now. 😞

                @sunflowerinrain nothin old about it! the streamers and so forth even address each other as 'chat' meaning the group chat where people type their chatter to the group.

                I'm sweeping this one under the "some people have narrow definitions of stuff" rug and leaving it there!

                        @falcennial

                        I’m curious to know what your definition of “chat with LLM” is as opposed to a non-chat use of an LLM.

                        My job is forcing me to “boost my productivity™” and I’ve had a LLM “summarise” some things. But it’s definitely me giving it a command and just seeing what it comes up with. It’s not a back and forth with it like some people do.

                        Is every interaction with a LLM a chat?

                          @Quantium40 no. my question is definitely worded correctly. it contains the right words in the right order to pose the intended meaning, in good faith, to the intended audience. it is, by definition, a perfect question so don't need worry about problems with it; none will ever exist.

                          if you need a dictionary for definitions that's ok, but if you have your own definitions of the words and concepts used, please use them.

                          speaking multiple languages is impressive! thank you for participating.

                            @falcennial i chat with ai everyday, and i call ai to do what it can do, and it do very good.

                            The important thing is that you know what it can do, and where is his boundary?

                                @svavar personally my current definition of chat is a back and forth of 3 or more message volleys. (not 3 each, 3 total).

                                I would leave definitions up to the answerer's judgement though. dictionaries have useful ones so if it's a puzzle one can't put into words, a judgement call or a dictionary check are both legit ways to do it.

                                I find the huge diversity of people's experiences very educational.

                                  @falcennial I wish I could put none at all, but Claude is ubiquitous at work. I've limited it to one condition. If I'm pretty sure the person I'm going to ask will ask Claude and paste me the response, as frequently happened, I cut out the middle man. It's damn depressing though.
