Apparently now in Siri in macOS 27 (which has replaced Spotlight as the thing you get on ⌘Space), when you type a mathematical expression, you get an incorrect result in large text at the top, and then the correct result in smaller text underneath.

@daisy It's too bad computers aren't any good at basic arithmetic

@daisy apparently not? 8.1/3 is 2.7, this just looks like the UI failed to update after the last keystroke. That’s a low-quality bug if so but it’s not an “AI bad at maths” thing.

@daisy@cloudisland.nz the classic vibecoding technique: implement the same feature twice in slightly different ways

@daisy It divided 8.1/3. It skipped the 9.

@daisy Why do a single DIV operation in your local cpu when you can also send the operation out over the cloud to run in a 1T LLM inference engine using four 200gig gpus for verification? Gotta make money from all that stockpiled dram somehow, and surely some advertiser somewhere might be willing to pay to learn that you were interested in dividing those two specific numbers.

@mattdarveniza Cool story bro. Well done for keeping up the age-old tradition of men sliding into women’s replies doing things like rebutting claims she didn’t make I guess.

Everyone in my replies telling me it showed me the correct result for 8.1/3: yes well done, I’m so glad you’ve figured out what caused the bug, your badge for being a very special boy who is cleverer than the other people in the replies is in the mail. It’s still a shitty sloppy bug in a basic function of a headline feature of the OS that breaks something that used to work just fine.
And no, it wasn’t a split-second UI glitch, it stayed the way it appears in the screenshot until I exited, did the same thing when I tried it again, and only on the third try did it update properly.

But Daisy didn't say "AI is bad at maths", she said she gets an incorrect result, which you just confirmed, right?

@daisy@cloudisland.nz and this is why i'm breaking away from the apple ecosystem once this computer is on its last legs. such great fucking "intelligence," amirite? /s

@daisy reading through the comments with regard to the last digit being ignored, I am now curious - would it update to the correct result if you just press space once again? or would that break this prediction completely? But besides this, it really underscores the decline of a strive for quality in the broader field 🤮 AI really lowered the perceived bar for many for what is considered "good enough"

@daisy we've come full circle, they invented code so inefficient they made the math machines bad at math

@ericjames @daisy You can install free software on mac hardware I believe, if you're brave enough and want an early parole. The shibboleth "hackintosh" may be of use in your quest.

@daisy they're really begging the question "how much can Apple fuck up before it's less painful to run Linux on the macbook instead"
I've been using a VM in protest of the age verification being built in to Safari and native web views

@daisy@cloudisland.nz I think this is our math teachers.
They told us we wouldn't always have a calculator on us, but then we built tiny calculators to keep in our pockets.
Now they went and conquered the world of tech behind everyone's back, to make our calculators bad at math. -
