@danirabbit Related: slopbros who think the computer in Star Trek is an "AI" (psst: it's not, it's just a command-line with speech-to-text).

    Ugh.

@thomholwerda @danirabbit I wish we had a speech operated command line. Google Assistant used to almost be that but it was discontinued & couldn't do much beyond Google approved things in the first place.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online @griotspeak@soc.mod-12.com the problem with Mordor is obviously that it lacked a comprehensive B2B strategy. Would have been a Utopia if not for...

@aud @danirabbit @griotspeak Sauron only lost to those meddling hobbits, & that wizard too, because he didn't use AI to optimize his Microsoft Office 365 based cryptocurrency investment workflow.

@zbrown @danirabbit I have not read it either nor do I plan to. And I've binge watched all movies in a day more than a decade ago so I thankfully don't remember much of it!

The middle earth games were dope though.

@alatiera @zbrown @danirabbit My favorite part of the Lord of the Rings, which I am sure you remember as well, was when Ace Ventura defeated Saruman with a tiny blowpipe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieLPn0gdpEU

@aud @danirabbit @griotspeak right like this is the thing, Tolkien was trying hard to make a mythos that's distinct from any real thing and original, and yet the core metamyth is as Christian as it's possible to be

like, each of his Ages ends with the downfall of the greatest remaining evil power.... as if evil is a thing with a specific face, as if stopping an individual makes change in the world

@ireneista @aud @danirabbit @griotspeak and that conservative trope of each age being notably lesser than the one before it, like the only thing more powerful than good or evil is entropy which wait hang on

@randomgeek @aud @danirabbit @griotspeak and on the other hand of course, the "cardboard age" part in particular is repackaged original sin.

the rhetoric goes that nobody today is powerful, remarkable, etc, they're all shit, unchangeably so, so they must permanently feel inadequate and also their only hope to greatness is through zero-sum thinking
