Did Pete Hegseth skip school the day they taught about Spartan warriors: the forced male-bonding and sodomy, cruel hazing, brutal punishment, and sociopathy? Did he learn it from one film? Or is this exactly what he wants in "his" military?
Children started their training at age 7, continued it until 20, and remained in the army until age 60 -- or their much earlier death. Hierarchy and abject obedience to command were paramount.

With Thermopylae, the Spartans and their allies were badly outnumbered.
At Leuctra, the Thebans built their tactics around the Spartans being unimaginative ‘no retreat!’ meatheads, invented the echelon formation and beat the Spartans so hard that the myth of their invincibility was shattered forever.

Pete Hegseth may not know those details, but he's a fascist, so he would probably be fine with the vicious, depraved side of the Spartan military if he knew about it. I'm sure that would include the part where it was only possible because the Spartan economy was built on the backs of an enslaved population far larger than their citizenry. -
