      @lykkebrammer @CiaraNi

You're right that before you've landed here and gotten oriented, it's an impossible ask to figure that out. Both similar and different enough to commercial social media - which makes it harder

(I've also been considering hopping instances to a server hosted in Europe, but so far that's also been an impossible ask, even with well written guides telling me exactly how to do it)

@forestfjord @lykkebrammer Agreed. I am glad I've never felt the need to move from the lovely, calm, well-run server I am on because I don't think moving is a cannot-go-wrong one-click operation (for me, at any rate). And I would miss not being able to take my existing posts and conversations with me.

@Wifiwits @DavidBridger This has happily reminded me of one of the happiest moments of my life, the moment when I learnt that the Scone of Stone in the Discworld is based on an actual real Stone of Scone in Scotland.

          Lol. I pronounce it "sc-oh-ne"

            Ditto:

'Why are you still on Bluesky too?'

'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?'

’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’

It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.

@CiaraNi Yes. And frankly no one has the right to impose purity tests. It's the Socials, not a religious community. It's a bit of fun and a way to communicate.

I agree, it's not at all welcoming to greet people like this and smacks of self righteousness.
Loads of people join .social just because it's the first they come across. Folk can discover for themselves and move instance if they want to. The fact they're here on Mastodon should be welcomed.

I know plenty of really decent folk on .social, it's a shame if people miss out on their input because they've blocked the largest server, just because it's big.

That's my understanding as well. The people I know who have moved servers generally keep their old accounts up if they want to maintain their media / post archive. The folks who set everything to self destruct (delete) don't have that problem 🙃

@CiaraNi (I'm having matcha 🍵) I understand smaller instances need to prevent bots etc and minority communities especially need some screening before registration. But when I made my general purpose account, I didn't want to write a little essay about myself and be vetted on whether I can exist there. So the social it goes. especially when I don't even introduce myself to people in real life lol. I now just have multiple accounts on multiple instances for different stuff.

That's a good point about why servers that require a personal application would not be of interest to everyone. And as you say, people can have multiple accounts. And we can all chat across servers anyway. Most of the time, I don't notice what server anyone is on.

@CiaraNi indeed this is not helpful. Especially if they do not ask for advice in that direction, like I cannot find people with my interest or from my region. And the answer should always be longer than hashtag, server.

On second thought maybe we should revive this Netiquette concept from the 1990s?

@prefec2 I was thinking about the cases when someone issues unsolicited instructions to newcomers who haven't asked for advice or asked any questions, who've just posted a friendly Hello, Mastodon! introduction. And yes, agreed, it is helpful to offer useful information if they do ask for help with something.
