    @Heidentweet @edri

    Both. Also with journalists.

The "EU" or "EC" is often taken as a single entity. But they aren't. There isn't one "they", but there are many political factions involved in the policymaking.

There's another fedi discussion going about representatives within the EC opting for W Social, a proprietary shady social media, and that they should instead put more weight on their presence in the fediverse.

The EC fediverse account is already answering and responding sporadically to people who reply to the announcements they publish on their account. That is very valuable: direct 2-way communication. There is a social media team operating it, who are able to convey opinions from fedizens to policy makers.

Frequently on the EU official website people are asked to do a survey and state their opinion on upcoming policies. When you take the time to fill those out, you never hear back. You never know if you just wasted your time.

Tagging them increases the value of fediverse.

🛫 The European Commission is finalising talks with the Trump administration on the 'Enhanced Border Security Partnership' (EBSP) Framework Agreement to keep visa exemptions for EU citizens travelling to the US.

@edri If a European (or any other non-US) Parliament asked me how to handle this, here's what I'd sugggest:

1: Issue a Level IV "do not travel" warning against the United States.

2: Refuse all deals with Trump, let him require visas. Share no data whatsoever, declare that even visa-requiring admissability to the US is "no longer a priority of this country."

3: For every citizen detained by CBP or ICE, arrest one wealthy US businessmen who foolishly strayed into the country. Offer to exchange prisoners.

What does this mean for people who are not travelling to the US?
Because: if US autorities have access to sensitive data of EU people, what or who is making sure that this access is reliably limited to the data of people who are really travelling to the US?

4/4 Let's be clear: these excessive demands are nothing less than blackmail from the US. We're calling on EU leaders to fight to protect our fundamental rights against yet another instance of the US bullying the EU into dismantling key safeguards: don't sell our data to the US 🚫

                I agree with your points.

One thing I think may be happening is a deliberate effort by the people behind Heritage 2024 to insulate the USA from the rest of the world.

The reason appears to be to limit or prevent #USian interaction with anyone who is not from the #USA. At a guess this would be to improve META's control over what citizens think and how they vote.

2/4 This 'Enhanced Border Security Partnership' Framework Agreement would mean an automated exchange of personal data, including highly sensitive information, and access to EU biometric databases to screen and identify travellers.

In short, the US is demanding excessive and unfettered access to information and sensitive personal data of people in the EU, intensifying #surveillance 🙅🏽‍♀️

A leak of the draft agreeement shows that the Commission is giving into US's demands and risking our rights.

@edri Don't forget the current US government's record of ignoring treaties whenever it suits them - especially after it has sucked whatever value it might have wanted from the treaty.

@edri extreme right parties use the frustration about EU polítics to catch new followers. In a constantly growing world a common ground for European countries is necessary but the current EU is so rotten that it would probably be better to start from scratch.

@edri Visa-free access is valuable only for places people want to visit. The EU could negotiate much more strongly by placing travel advisories on the USA (entirely reasonable for a place where people are shot by government employees with no due process and no consequences). Most travel insurance is invalid if there was a travel advisory in place when you left. And you really don’t want to visit the USA without travel insurance because a brief trip to the doctor without it can bankrupt you.

US tourism is already taking a big hit because people who read the news are avoiding it. Put more pressure on.
