@iFixit @pixelworship okay I'm gonna be frank here, I've recently installed Linux Mint and there are steps that non techy people seriously struggle with.
Someone ought to just make the onboarding process even easier, with a module that'll set up their flash drive in the right formatting AND the .iso in one click. Install instructions need 90% fewer words. The whole BIOS thing where windows has changed safe boot settings or whatever? I needed someone to talk me through it patiently.

@iFixit @pixelworship having said all that, now mint is running on my otherwise deaded laptop, it's a piece of piss and I love it, but all thanks to a gentlethem on this platform who was willing to have a 30m call with me, or I'd have shelled out the money for a new laptop and W11

The BIOS you refer to is often just a small part, but some things are compatible back to 80s and before.
So cruft over 50 years accumulate unfortunately.
AND monopolies are a HUGE part of this.
The great part of computers today is that a lot is actually compatible, can work together, and Linux can use most external devices today.

Just another silly example, WiFi cards and chips which are used in all (most) computers need some binary code.
This code COULD be from a small chip next to the wi-fi chips, but saving a few pennies by removing this storage, means it has to come from the driver program when starting it ...
So instead of the Wi-Fi bringing the necessary code. The operating system developers, all of them. Need to download and package it to use this chip/card
