I've been using Mastodon sporadically for a few years.
I don't use it more because I don't understand the possibilities, the different timelines. I don't know how the algorithms work, what is the effect of a "boost", etc.
Could you recommend a text that explains these things clearly and precisely, in Portuguese, English, or Spanish?
Thank you!

@ramgarlic in short: no algos, your timeline is filled with what the people you follow either post themselves or what they boost. You can also follow and search hashtags (or block them).

@ramgarlic I don’t have a link to a text to explain more, but you can quickly build a Python people to follow list by looking at who other Python people follow.

There is no algorithm.
A "Favorite" lets the poster know you saw/liked their post.
A "Boost" puts that boost on the Home timeline of everyone who follows you.
Your Home timeline is everyone you follow, and all the posts they boost.
Your Local timeline is all the other people on your Mastodon server.
Your Federated timeline is all the people that anyone on your server have ever interacted with.

@mborus @ramgarlic I think the key is to follow a lot of people at first to build out your timeline. Then use it to find others, curate, etc.

@mborus @ramgarlic There are some "start pack" lists of Python people to follow: https://fedidevs.com/s/Mzk/
So far, I'd recommend you follow everyone who gives nice responses to your query

I would add:
- Decentralized: Like email, you can use a diferent instance (server) than any other person, and still be in contact with them
- Federated: Diferent services talk to each other. i.e. you can follow from your Mastodon people in PixelfeldDecentralization is important, if your instance change and you don´t like it, you can flight to another instance
Federation has some limits. I.e. only if your post contains an image will be seen from a follower in Pixelfeld.

@mborus @ramgarlic @dabeaz This is the way. Also, given that you are on a specific instance (foss focused), also go through your instance's timeline and check out what and who looks interesting on there.
Follow every profile that looks interesting and nice. You can always unfollow.
