If all you have a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.

@mcc “buy a basic toolset so you have a few to choose from”
-
If all you have a hammer, then everything looks like a nail. But if all you have is a screwdriver or a wrench, this doesn't necessarily mean that everything looks like a screw or a bolt, because either of those items can be used as an improvised hammer. Also if you have two wrenches you can break a padlock without needing boltcutters. I'm not actually sure what the moral here is
@mcc@mastodon.social "I need to own at least two wrenches"?

@mcc Keep adding things to your toolbox to broaden the ways in which you see the world.

@mcc the moral is, buy an axe.

@mcc@mastodon.social I think "everything is a hammer" -
@steve if there was a neighborhood tool library everyone could contribute one different tool and then everyone would have appropriate options when solving tasks
@mcc @steve Possibly, though my first thought was "Or it'd end up with 15 adjustable wrenches and no power tools"
The guy one can borrow tools from would probably be more helpful in that they typically come with helpful advice for solving the problem properly too.
If you're really lucky, they have a better, cheaper, cleaner, and easier way of what you want done too

I think the moral is "if you get good results, it means you had the right tool". Or that most things break if you hit them right. -

@mcc if all you have is sour cream, everything looks like a potato

@mcc @lisamelton I'll be honest -- pretty sure I've used screwdrivers as pry bars nearly as often as I've used them to turn screws...

When you have a nail, everything looks like a hammer
https://doomscroller.social/notes/ancenempdid801uiFor the record, the thing that inspired this thread was that I actually did need to nail in a nail, but I did not have a hammer. So I initially tried nailing it in with wirecutters, which did not work, and then I tried again with a putty knife, and that worked extremely well. So I guess the moral is that everything looks like a hammer, but only some things are actually hammers

@mcc hammers: somewhat overrated

When you have a nail, everything looks like a hammer
https://doomscroller.social/notes/ancenempdid801ui@mcc this does in fact apply to screwdriver. screwdriver can be poker, lever, chisel, nailset, scraper, etc. when you have X, screwdriver looks like solution

@mcc I must have a lot of wrenches, because everything looks nuts to me right now.

every putty knife i've known has been a flimsy thing with no weight in it
you must have one hell of a beast of a putty knife

@kgjenkins @mcc If all you have is a shop vac, every problem looks like a mess left over from the last several projects.

@mcc If you have a hammer, you could also break the lock.

If you only see nails when holding a hammer, that is a lack of imagination.

@mcc I think you need a second padlock to open a padlock
