@pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie This has been going on for ages with people using public transport, but since they are lower on the social ladder, it hasn’t been seen as much of a problem.

But this messes with car people, and boy shouldn’t you mess with car people.

All mass surveillance and data retention from it is bad, but there’s a strong smell of privilege over this outrage.

@ahltorp @pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie you're not wrong, but I suspect in this case you're going to catch more flies with "also" than with "but"... it seems like a good time to ensure that people include transit surveillance in their understanding of the problem

@mathowie “Let's say you want to go skinny dipping in your pool but don't want your camera to record you because you can't trust cloud providers to not have a data leak and then have your junk on the internet.”

@mardor @mathowie this. Covering camera lenses on electronics for privacy reasons is a perfectly reasonable thing to do (we shouldn't have to, but oh well), and maybe we should start thinking about covering our other cameras when we don't need them.

@joepie91 @pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie I’m not saying the outrage is wrong, just that they didn’t show up when only less privileged people were affected. And let’s face it, nothing is going to get car people to care about pedestrians, cyclists or public transport users.

@ahltorp @pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie well, you do you, but approaching it this way certainly won't make anyone care.

@LukefromDC @mathowie Thanks. So it's the date retention and misuse that's the problem.

@pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie they have no guardrails for the use either. Every department I’ve heard of that got audited, failed. None of them cared to try and stop abuse. Stalking ex spouses, those spouses new interests, family members, potential love interests, they can search for anyone for any resin and never answer for why. In the movie Men in Black they had tech, Tommy Lee Jones abused it there too.

@ahltorp @pthane @LukefromDC @mathowie public buses in the US have been recorded for a long time. It was already commonplace enough in 1994 the movie Speed used one in the plot. The person who placed the bomb was watching the bus driver through the camera mounted in the bus. Mass transit stations are some of the heaviest surveilled places too. You’ve been told that you don’t have a choice in public.

@mathowie I am not American so didn't pick up on the Flock camera controversy until recently. I'm missing the background. Why are they so much more of a problem then speed cameras deployed all over Europe? Is it because they are privately owned and operated for profit rather than installed by police/local govt?

@pthane @mathowie Speed cameras take photos when an infraction is detected. These take photos of everyone for dragnet surveillance purposes.
