Canada likely to follow in Portugals footsteps and cancel the purchase of 72 F-35 fighter jets, because that aircraft is made in the dictatorship from where The God King is threatening all NATO allies.

Good. It's madness to purchase something so essential to national security that can simply be turned off on a whim by the seller. I read that is possible with these F-35s. Kind of like that Starlink thingy owned by a psycho billionaire freak. -

@lin11c @randahl Software updates for on the ground servicing systems can also be withheld, as I understand it. Same result, planes will fly, but they won't be competitive after a while. Also, these planes are not just planes, they excel by being able to connect with a large network of sensors, satellites, etc, which the US of course also largely provides. These can also be shut off, although alternatives can be provided, they are just not available in the same quantities as the US provides.

You know your stuff! I did read in an article (sorry I didn't save the link) that an advantage of the Gripen is that the source code is available. After recent events, this appears to be a major plus in this rapidly shifting world. My main point is that the US has been deeply compromised and is not a trustworthy partner at this time. Will that change? I don't know.

"..the US could simply remotely turn off F-35s' advanced situational awareness capabilities", this is the ability I also mentioned to cut of the connections to radars, etc. which makes the F35 superior in combat. EU countries has those capabilities too, so they could replace it, but probably not in the quantities required, and it would take time to hack in. It's similar to Starlink in Ukraine; Eutelsat *can* replace it, but they don't have nearly the same coverage as Starlink.
