@randahl yeh, the people I read on military stuff are saying it's already a done deal. F-35's out, Gripen in.
I wish Australia would do the same, as the Gripen is perfect for here

@randahl 2026 is really turning out to be the "find out" stage of the USA's decision to fuck around with Trump for another term.

@randahl The worst part is that we knew from the onset that the F-35 is an inferior fighter, but, you know, Danish air defense purchased it for "political reasons."

@randahl (GOP/USA Ambass. to CAN, appointed by Felon 47, Pete) "Hoekstra apparently skipped the class on diplomacy being about saying the nastiest thing in the nicest way. Instead, he threatened..." No suprise there: GOP being despicable bullies in every possible way: threats/crude manners/nonsensical. Why would anyone want to buy weapons/military equipment from their new enemy that tried to insult, economically hurt them, & theatened to take annex them? (Unless you are a German Merz fan boy.)

@randahl As to why it's inferior, it's because it wasn't designed to be a fighter only. This violates a key element of air fights, in that anything that isn't aimed at air fighting decreases your capabilities. See the "OODA loop" on that aspect, quite appropriately identified by a fighter pilot.

@swggrkllr3rd @randahl so frustrating watching that, because the person has clearly used ChatGPT to inform them of the capabilities of equipment.
Pulse-doppler radars don't inherently remove ground clutter, you need a moving target indicator radar which filters ground clutter and focuses on moving targets. The F-20, developed in the 1970's, had it.
On a side note, the MiG-31 has an IR tracking system, so I'm not sure the MiG-31's didn't see their opponents

@swggrkllr3rd @randahl oh, and the MiGs would never have got RWR pings, because the F-35 can TWS

@wolf @randahl I am by no means an expert on airfights, but hasn't the Ukraine war shown that fighter jets on both sides are mostly used to deliver long range missiles and shoot down drones and missiles, rarely joining enemy fighers in direct combat? F35 has long range capabilities perfectly suited for this (if they are not bricked by the US), and Gripen will mostly have an advantage in early phases of a conflict, say the first days of Russia invading a part of Canada or Latvia.
