@randahl At first it looks like good news. But I read, that they lost, because they toned down a bit and now were not extreme enough anymore for parts of their voters?

@murb @randahl M did already work with SD for the past four years. But SD didn’t have ministers in the cabinet. Now they have been promised cabinet positions if they win the election.
Why people in the cities vote for M is probably because there are more rich people there, and those who think they are rich. House prices in the cities are very high, and many apparently feel that property taxes are a bigger threat than the fall of civilisation.

In the Netherlands we just lost a year of government with far right Geert Wilders. One year of political infighting and nonsense without any progress and then he pulled the plug…
The far right can only protest and will never deliver, and that is by design… let us keep it that way. Because make no mistake, they are even prepared to break the democratic principles to arrive and stay at power. We have seen what happened when Hitler came to power. Total destruction...

@randahl Although I hope you are right, and is as far as it gets, I do feel the need to nuance the optimism a bit.
Swedish politcal culture these days is a bit to found of blocks and tactical voting. Before summer the ”Liberal” party (L) where polling at around 1.5%. This was far below the 4% threshold they needed to pass to stay in parlament.
Now the final results are not in yet, but it looks to me like their last minute +3% gain matches the -3% loss you mention.

So it's not really good news.@diekenbrock Nah. If anything they’ve escalated after more mainstream parties started mimicking then. Going from stopping people at the border to sending ”back” those who are already here (including kids who grew up here).
The real risk here is the center-left doing to little in the upcoming four years, and then having the resurge in 2030 (or earlier in case of a government crisis leading to a snap election).

@randahl the left will now have to try to clean up the mess and that will be costly which will anger people who will then vote right again, and the right will continue to play the fiddle while Rome burns and leave the bill to the left the next time around which starts the cycle over. The pendulum swings will only become greater until something breaks.

What is interesting is that SD are loosing ground everywhere, on national level (Riksdagen/parliament), regional level and on the municipal level. Everywhere I have checked in the country they are loosing voters. I would like to see them loose more, and that we would have a larger red-green victory. However, their narrative that they are always gaining and are "true" representatives of the people is broken.

@randahl in the Netherlands cities are typically more left wing, more green, (Berlin and Paris are also more progressive for sure), but am I correct seeing the opposite (M is the 'moderate' party that wanted to work with the extreme right, right?) in Stockholm? Malmö area is even SD territory?
@murb I think Sweden is a different because it is a huge geography.
Denmark is a small country, and refugees are distributed evenly among regions.
Sweden is a vast country and southern Sweden has many more immigrants than remote regions. I suppose this paves the way for SD's narratives about everything being an immigration problem. While this narrative is less effective in regions with little immigration.

Sweden is an outlier at best. Ask Hungary, Poland, Denmark, the US, France, Spain, ....Hoping, that right-wing extremists will lose by winning is just coping.
It's not like the SD just perished, they've been relatively stable, compared to the conservative parties all over Europe.

@murb @randahl The M party wants to form the "Tidö" union with SD, L and KD on the national level. But in Stockholm at the municipality level no party wants to cooperate with SD. SD seems to have got 18% nationwide but only 8% of the votes in Stockholm. Stockholm is also more left and more green than the country as a whole.
