Still no baby goats!!
-
It is seriously so cool to watch goat instincts. The mama immediately starts talking to her babies in a different voice than she uses to talk to me or the adult goats, and the babies almost immediately know how to start nursing, wagging their little tails and everything. The mama cleans off the babies by licking them, which also stimulates them to get up and nurse. Cute AND functional!
Maybe one other mama in early labour?
@sundogplanets Can you record them? I don't think I've ever heard a baby goat.

the way that animals "just learn" how to do what they need is indeed amazing. i remember the first time i dealt with a litter of kittens. their eyes were barely open before they'd been shown the litter box, how to feed, they already had starter claws.

BABY GOATS!!! The first mama has 2 healthy babies!
They are dried off, warmed up, and starting to try to nurse so I'm back inside warming up for a bit.

@sundogplanets the gross part is listening to them chomping their way through the afterbirth.
. Ew. -

. Ew.@deepmud Yeah, I couldn't handle it today and took it away after she had a few nibbles. It's SO bizarre watching a totally vegetarian animal eating a bloody placenta.

Still no baby goats!! And the weather is now totally awful: freezing rain overnight, currently horizontal hard snow (ouch), and we're supposed to get 20cm of snow today. So maybe today is the day! It *is* the due date for 5 of them, so I'll be checking on them a lot in between trying to get back into some kind of regular writing schedule after chaos travel.
@sundogplanets 5 of them eh... how many goats do you have? Or figure you'll have after now?

@sundogplanets I used to dairy goats. Also, we had a nice flock of colored sheep. I've assisted in many births, especially since the founding ram was a ramboullet/finn cross.

Goat babies are just as insistent as human babies! (But a lot more mobile ~3 hours after birth)
