Every time a newcomer posts an introduction and somebody tells them they shouldn’t have joined Mastodon.social and need to move to a different server, an angel loses their wings.

@CiaraNi I wish dot-social would just close registrations, they are two orders of magnitude too big already. Then we would not have this salad.
@mirabilos Whether they do or don't, I don't think people need to issue unsolicited instructions to people who've just joined Mastodon, telling them they are doing it wrong. It seems rude and unhelfpul, I think. And certainly unwelcoming.
-
That's the argument my OH uses... what's the fastest cake in the world: scone. (skon)
Half my family are from the midlands and upwards (UK) and it seems more folk there say "sc-oh-ne".
@grb090423 @falcennial @CiaraNi @psneeze
It's scone as in cone
(North England) -
@psneeze Yes it is! I can't believe there are people who walk this earth saying Skon Skon Skon.
-
@CiaraNi It could have changed by now, since that was back in 2022. But I wouldn't put money on Musk prioritising making it more secure. Especially if it did anything to stop his minions actually stealing accounts, as he's threatened to do in the past when brands decided to stop using Twitter.
@beecycling I certainly wouldn't trust that man with anything or about anything. I fully deleted my account long ago, so I have nothing left to worry about there.

@CiaraNi
I agree, it's not at all welcoming to greet people like this and smacks of self righteousness.
Loads of people join .social just because it's the first they come across. Folk can discover for themselves and move instance if they want to. The fact they're here on Mastodon should be welcomed. -
@CiaraNi I signed up on mastodon.social because it seemed the obvious choice, and because the explanations of servers and "instances" were invariably written from an unhelpful technical point of view with no explanation of why any of that had any impact on me, and because I could find no information about the support capabilities and average lifetimes of individual Mastodon servers.
@Corb_The_Lesser Those are fine reasons for joining the main (as I think of it) server - that makes sense. I think a lot of people have similar reasons and a similar experience when they move into the Fediverse.
-
-
@CiaraNi Ha. The instance I first landed on, on arriving in the Fediverse, was so inclusive yet protective of its users it was a severe culture shock and left me reeling. I was left to find my feet and when I moved to less protective environments more to my taste I had the fullest Fediverse etiquette training you could get. I’m not naming them cos there’s lots of vulnerable people there that prefer to feel safe.
@stooryduster 'the fullest Fediverse etiquette training' - I can just imagine

-
@johnlorimer @annika same for me. And I too deleted.my twit account when.Musk took it over
Never tried blusky as found masto instead@kcpoole took me a while to finally delete twitter. Most of the people I talked to online moved to Bluesky, but I just never liked it.
With the news in the last day that they hid the fact they received more crypto money - I was done.
I've never given Masto a proper go, but I am going to try. -
Ditto:
'Why are you still on Bluesky too?'
'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?'
’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’
It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.
@CiaraNi much needed message. Thank you

@CiaraNi
A move to mastodon from other SMs is a big deal, I did research first before choosing (a geographical server) ... but new members, just let them settle in first. The take up of other SMs is because it's one click simple, it's not immediately obvious what the Fediverse is until you join... -
@CiaraNi thats how i ended up trapped in this mess. I want my wings back!
@burt_cokain The Fediverse Lost Property office is just over there - first door on your left after you've walked through the entrance to Mastodon.social.
-
@CiaraNi So much this! I call them the 'Mastodon Police'. And because of such guys I had nearly left Mastodon again. Since then I block them radically.
@NatureMC The Mastodon Police are quite a force

-
@CiaraNi@mastodon.green damn. and if you have Linux you should change because your distro is evil, if you like a game you should not, the devs are evil capitalists..
@thornsmau Exactly this kind of thing!
-
-
@Primavera You remind me that I wanted to colour some fabric with tea today, thanks!
@CiaraNi @rgarner@NatureMC Very cool! @Primavera @rgarner
-
@bleistifterin @rgarner Ohmygod are you trying to start a flame war in the Fediverse. Milk in first!
@CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner
Tea made in the cup = milk in last
Tea poured from the pot = milk in first. -
@johnlorimer @annika It is a great analogy, for which I can take no credit. I read an article that used Asbestos for an AI analogy (I want to say it was Cory Doctorow, but am too lazy to check right now). I've used it ever since, I think it really captures that situation and the mess that AI is making for the future.
-
@CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner
Tea made in the cup = milk in last
Tea poured from the pot = milk in first.@Sarahw @CiaraNi @bleistifterin ^^this is the way. These are the ways? Anyway yes.
-
You're right that before you've landed here and gotten oriented, it's an impossible ask to figure that out. Both similar and different enough to commercial social media - which makes it harder
(I've also been considering hopping instances to a server hosted in Europe, but so far that's also been an impossible ask, even with well written guides telling me exactly how to do it)
@forestfjord @lykkebrammer Agreed. I am glad I've never felt the need to move from the lovely, calm, well-run server I am on because I don't think moving is a cannot-go-wrong one-click operation (for me, at any rate). And I would miss not being able to take my existing posts and conversations with me.
