I logged in to LinkedIn to see a page full of people praising DHH, got mad, and wrote this. Less than 12 hours later I got an email telling me "Your post doesn’t comply with our Professional Community Policies on bullying and harassment. It’s been removed from LinkedIn and only you can access it."

Big tech is more and more mask-off every day.

@glyph this sucks. I just had to be on LinkedIn for a bit and it sucks. Luckily I got an offer so I can go back to ignoring it for years at a time

@glyph LinkedIn is such a weird place with the only positive reactions. Not even an angry face or a sad one.

I recently got the wrong end of the stick on Facebook with similar wording (apparently calling someone a nazi somethingorother because they called for "destroy all of them" in the context of the US killing people on boats supposedly b/c of drugs, was too much "threat and causing fear").

Of course their comment does not, to this day, go against the Community Standards. How shocking.

@glyph my first impression of DHH was working with rails in the 00s and reading some of his opinions as a side-effect

He was an asshole and didn't know how relational databases worked. I distinctly remember how his rails docs implied doing the database's job (filtering and aggregating data) in one of the slowest runtimes on earth (ruby) was somehow "better".

Not terribly surprised a stupid, arrogant asshole ended up being a nazi. I still don't get how he wasn't written off as an idiot then

@glyph I wonder if it's been a full year since I permanently wrote off LinkedIn being worth my time. Used to be, it was still fucking awful, but an awful you had to put up with to get hired. And now you can't even get hired. You don't have to be 3blue1brown to do the math on this.

@glyph I left Linked in a year or two ago because it did nothing for my business and all I evrer saw was self promotion or fawning congratulations. It is all corpo BS and I don't need that. I work for myself by meself. Me and my 18 personalities a computer or 3 and something to play music when I am not on the phone.

@beeoproblem @glyph Back in the early days of Rails I started building a few applications with it. Before long I found some methods whose supported API was unclear. I suggested to the developers that they really needed to add documentation comments. They said that they didn't need documentation because you could read the source code. That's when I decided they were idiots, and I stopped using Rails.

“Make a LinkedIn alternative” comes up every now and then.

What do you think we’d need?
Professional references? Searchable job boards? Searchable job histories?

I bet if we figured out some basic requirements, it might not be that hard.

@glyph You may have triggered a filter. I mean.... that's still telling! But maybe you can repost using words other than "nazi" and "murder". Or censor them.

And let me be the first to say: UGH.

@benpate @nette "an interested user base". 99% of LinkedIn users do not have feature-based requirements. You need a marketing team and a reason for people to be there. You'd probably need to find a niche professional market to target at first, with specific needs that LinkedIn isn't meeting.

@benpate @nette like the only reason I am logging in at all in the first place is to get my writing in front of more people. I don't want any of the "tools" that they're offering, I just want to get words in front of the eyeballs that refuse to touch fedi. (Or entice them to come to Fedi, since every post has a "discussion on mastodon" link included)

@benpate @nette @glyph I am on the fence if this is a good idea or not, as companies may refuse to bite, but I think trying to find some way to track if some company is actually filling positions they post on the job board. There are a lot of job postings out there that are literally just data gathering.

Maybe try reversing the job search? Have people in pools and have companies request to interview them. Because afaict, the current model doesn't work great.

@glyph Yeah, they really don't like you calling people who've explicitly expressed Nazi positions Nazis. I can't think why

“Make a LinkedIn alternative” comes up every now and then.

What do you think we’d need?
Professional references? Searchable job boards? Searchable job histories?

I bet if we figured out some basic requirements, it might not be that hard.

@glyph sick of hearing about David.. all he did was vibe code some dot files and people are throwing millions at him. It's ridiculous. Definitely a political motivation behind it all.
