@morton Hilariously, there were NO white people in the original tale. Not by 'traditional' wipipo thinking, anyway. There are Greeks right now, this very day, who are outraged that a Black man is in the film. Apparently unaware that Greeks themselves were not considered 'white' by most Americans until only about a century ago, if that.

"going to the dogs" is also a phrase in UK English - it means the same thing as your Polish idiom (degradation) - it comes from people "losing their shirts" by betting on the wrong ones at the dog races.
The actual origin of the idiom is ancient and literal, and even appears in the Bible. It refers to the fact that food considered unfit for humans was given to dogs instead. That was often food that spoiled, and that's how it became an idiom for spoilage, ruin, or degradation.
