@Phosphenes @rgulick @futurebird This. I think a lot of people recognise slop for what it is, and why it is called "slop" in the first place.
Some older folks in my family have no idea what AI is anyway. If they see stuff that seems real, they think it is. That's a little scary.
@veronica @Phosphenes @rgulick @futurebird my grandma thinks ai looks more realistic than reality somehow. She opposes it, saying it is done to mock God by trying to make something smarter, but always picks ai youtube videos. Scams are worse and will worsen further.

@futurebird The only people I've personally met who have bought into LLM hype at face value are boomers... and I feel like it's related to that period in the 90s where some folks called the Internet a fad and nobody wants to look that foolish again.
Altho I am starting to wonder if there will still be an Internet in a few decades.

I am stunned by the people using AI, and how they fail to validate what they get. Yes, a lot of over 60s, but several late 30s or 40s. Grew up with computers, but not necessarily especially tech savvy)(While I qualify as an old guy, I seen a enough less than accurate or relevant responses in simple on line search responses to feel I was listening to the sleazier salesmen pushing their product over a competitors version.
(I use 'salesmen' intentionally, as there were very few women in the areas I worked in, and those few were very reliable)

@PaulWermer @futurebird yeah, and they continue doing it even though I've lost count of the amount of times I've said "and what does the source say", only for them to discover it doesn't say what the chatbot said.

I know it very well, I have been an early adopter.
Two things true: 1. The most disruptive technology since the Internet, perhaps the steam engine. 2. The promoters and heads of AI companies, are crooks, greed heads and grifters
I am astounded at the rate of progress and dismayed by the culture of slop
The "doomers" and the "boosters" (I claim I am neither) are indistinguishable

@futurebird I can attest to the fact there are many software developers who understand how it works well enough and are in fact big fans of LLMs, at least for software development purposes. FWIW though I don't know of any of those who are fans of it outside of that realm
@aeischeid @futurebird That is not true. I have seen at least two use cases outside software development
1. Summerising long documents
2. Reviewing documents (a spell checker on steroids)
In software I find it more useful to have it review my code than have me review it's code
Point is, it is too new to understand properly where it's weaknesses and strengths lie

It's not really true that "the most tech" people have the harshest words for it. Most tech people, including the tech influencers, have no real idea how technology works and are variously enthused by AI.

The only exceptions I can think of to "LLMs are completely controlled by technofascist oligarchs" are DeepSeek and that one Meta accidentally leaked and then made open source (which was still built by a corporation, one notorious for blatant human rights violations) -

My Gen Z kids told me, that Gen X/Boomer and older are more likely to do not recognize AI generated slop.
I am doing art and photography, so I get a strange feeling, when I see AI generated Images.
A same aged friend of mine is totally in AI and loves his "creations"
Worst are AI Voiceovers. They raise that uncanny feeling in me. brrrrrr
@desatyr @veronica @Phosphenes @rgulick @futurebird my 15 year old calls out AI images and videos instantly, even in thibgs that are really well done. I will ask her what she sees, and it will take her some time to point out the things that gave her the feel. When I look at her points, she is invariably correct.

I have a IoT system in my house. It has no AI in it, but I built it with AI. It was my first experiment in "Vibe Coding". I was using Home Assistant - but it illustrates everything wrong (IMO) with a lot of modern Free Software. It is bloated, slow and uses resources like no body pays. My Raspberry Pi 4 was crashing because it overheated running Home Assistant OS.
Methinks AI features have landed, or are due to land, in HA. Mēh! Good lucjk to them!
