@glyph Serkis has tried to explain this in his own words. I say “tried” because he fails

@glyph He’s also doing the usual media circuit, giving interviews where he explains that the big thing “Animal Farm” was missing was a happy ending

@jalefkowit have you seen Jacob Geller's latest? the timing is such that it couldn't have possibly been made so fast that it's a response to this, but it's a response to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cdowB9udPc

@jalefkowit Andy Serkis thinks that you can make an adapation…

        of *Animal Farm*…

        with *no ideology*…

        I am speechless

@glyph @jalefkowit Even after all of the ill that has befallen already, it flabbergasts me that we now have someone choose this time to take one of the most devastating critiques of fascism and offer it up in an oligarchy-friendly form to make a buck.

“In his 1946 essay ‘Why I Write,’ Orwell explained that his storytelling was never meant to drift into abstraction or polite ambiguity, but to instead confront oppression with intent. He noted then, ‘The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.’

But in an essay sent to critics, director Serkis describes his version as having ‘no ideology,’ instead promoting a parable with mass appeal that he said was meant to apply in any context. It’s a well-intentioned idea in terms of universality, but also the film’s fatal flaw.”

@glyph @jalefkowit I would say Serkis is the likely winner of the "Missing the point" award for this decade, but apparently someone is remaking "Threads" (the terrifying nuclear war drama) and has said their version will "[highlight] how resilience and connection can offer hope even in the most challenging of times."

WTF is going on right now?

@jalefkowit Was this version of the film literally commissioned and produced by the CIA, like the original animated version?

@jalefkowit Andy Serkis makes an Animal Farm movie, executives go 'cut all that political shit, and make those animals cuter. I want to vomit when I see them speak. I want my doctor to be concerned about my blood sugar levels. It'll bomb in the west, but China will eat up the cute animals, ignore all the dialogue that we've trimmed down to avoid offending them anyway, and we'll all be rolling in money'.

Everyone involves then racks lines of cocaine that would strike Dr Rockzo as excessive.
