Even here in liberal NYC, our firefighters are mostly horrible white supremacists and Republicans, despicable and suicidal fools. Trump won the working class, but even among the working class firefighters stand out as more conservative than average:

@marjolica Here in my own extremely diverse neighborhood of NYC, the first Trump sign I ever saw leading up to the 2016 election was on a car parked at the nearest fire station belonging to one of the firefighters. There are very very few Trump signs around here, and Mamdani dominated this neighborhood. Trump signs stand out.

In the UK most firefighters are in the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) which is affiliated to our Labour Party, has always been more to the left of the Party, and most recently 36% of members paid the political levy (it was 85% 10 years ago). -

For firefighters it is even more insane because the Republican Party literally is the party of heat waves and wildfires, threatening and killing firefighters at an accelerating rate with forest fires and other wildfires. For comparison, black voters in the USA are 15% Republican.

@jonesmurphy @marjolica Wildfire firefighters are a VERY different group than structure firefighters. (Source: I was a USFS wildfire fighter.) It's like saying that draftees are conservative because career military are conservative.

When I was a fire fighter in the '80s there were two groups: college students taking seasonal grunt jobs on the fire line, and long timers. Most of those long timers were perma-temps who signed up every year. An actual year round permanent job was highly prized. (that's only gotten worse since). The long timers were primarily from rural areas and had a rural viewpoint. Which was not always conservative but usually was. It's more likely to be so now. The students were more likely to be liberal especially the ones who did not grow up rural.
Some of my college friends went on to full careers in fire. The one I have had the most contact with turned religious and conservative even though she didn't have a rural background.
It's a safe bet that fire fighters are more likely to be conservative than not even if it's not true that all are.

@jonesmurphy @marjolica Interesting. I grew in Baltimore and my dad was a Baltimore City firefighter (ret. 1977), I saw the racism first hand and yet the union was also quite strong. My house never voted Republican.

@patmikemid @marjolica Union membership & popularity in the USA declined steeply as Civil Rights desegregated workplaces & unions. It has never recovered. Republicans have dominated the white working class and white union members since Civil Rights. They are gaining among non-black workers of color to the point where Trump became the first Republican in a while to win the working class. It's despicable. Many unions support Republicans, insanely.
