"Donald Trump now genuinely lives in a different reality, one in which neither grammar nor history nor the normal rules of human interaction now affect him. Also, he really is maniacally, unhealthily obsessive about the Nobel Prize."
"If the invaders were Russians, they would arrest all of the politicians, put gangsters in charge, shoot people on the street for speaking Danish, change school curricula, and carry out a fake referendum to rubber-stamp the conquest. Is that the American plan too?"
Exactly this. Because Trump wants America to be like Russia. He'll send ICE and put all Danish people into labor camps. And Peter Thiel will be the governor.

@anneapplebaum If, as the piece states in the last paragraph, the Republicans in Congress are "the last barrier," we might as well quit while we're behind.

@anneapplebaum
77 million voted for this, and approximately 80 million did not vote at all.more or less, these voters knew what they voted for or let it happen.
"Will Republicans in Congress ever step in?"
my guess is, no. even if republicans stop this orange nightmare, i give only partial pass, stopping should have happened far earlier. -

@anneapplebaum I wonder if he really believes he ended eight wars. He just may.
-
@anneapplebaum He's got dementia and he's almost done. I doubt he even has a consistent reality at all.
He's long past the point where I'd want to be shot but I'd actually want to be stopped before I did all this damage. He never gave a shit who he hurt.
That's why I don't really feel sorry for him. Otherwise I actually might because he actually has lost his shit and it ain't coming back.
@crazyeddie @anneapplebaum
He would be perfectly happy if he could stay at Mar A Lago in his Oval Office replica signing things with an AI news feed telling him everyone loves him. A random set of actors could be paraded through and he'd never know they weren't dignitaries. -

@anneapplebaum I'm not sure even an invasion of Greenland would be a "last straw" for the GOP in Congress. Although some of them have said it would be, they've always fallen in line before.
My favorite absurdity in this letter is "we had boats landing there, also." The Danes (as part of Denmark-Norway) were there long before the US even existed.
BTW, I always love your articles. Thank you for what you do.

It's only a partial coup at this point. The military and SS are still largely professionals even if the true believers are being removed. People would tell.

@anneapplebaum This is straight CRAZY. I can't believe the lengths GOP congressman and senators will go to secure an endorsement in a PRIMARY.

Totally! -
@anneapplebaum I used to think "running a country" required a decent amount of intelligence, skill, empathy, etc. Boy, was I ever wrong!

@misjavanlaatum @anneapplebaum @IndyRichard @misjavanlaatum @anneapplebaum wasn't wrong when she thought that "running a country required a decent amount of intelligence, skill, empathy, etc." It's just that the requirements are different for "running a country into the ground!"

Norwegians, please offers him a super-duper golden Nobel Prize when he arrives on Mars with all his cronies and oligarchs on a one-way ticket. -

@anneapplebaum The Peace Prize fixation is all about Barack Obama, the fact that Obama did win a Peace Prize (and Grammy and Emmy awards) and Trump did not.

@anneapplebaum Jan 6th was supposed to be the last straw… impeach, remove, convict.
@FrancoisPrague @anneapplebaum
Yeah, the last straw was several straws ago. -

"the last straw"how many last straws? which last straw? how many will come?
i think first impeachment vote was enough.
my prognosis is not very optimistic.

most importantly also the fascists and terror sponsors Thiel, almost every other tech fash & their puppets Vance & Co.
And I must say that I forgot a lot of other big names like Zuckerberg .

Great idea, to award him the Ig Nobel Prize. However:
"The Ig Nobel Prize is a prize to promote public engagement with scientific research. Its aim is to "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think"
No, that doesn't sound like Trump at all.
* Scientific research.
* Make people think. -

Republicans in Congress should REMOVE HIM

@Paul_stilgar @anneapplebaum I am not so surprised that he believes in all of this nonsense. We knew that already and he is not the only world leader with such opinions.
It's more surprising that he says this out loud. I am not a psychologist but maybe indeed this is some kind of defecit in inhibitory control related to aging
