    @inthehands I’m rather surprised there haven’t been the anarchist saboteurs that sometimes showed up and started fires during the George Floyd protests. Perhaps because the counter-actions have been so spontaneous, and locally organic, rather than giant groups marching and chanting, where outside folks can slide in and cause mischief. Or perhaps those saboteurs are now working for ICE.

    @mwyman @inthehands Groups doing actions, whether they’re Tesla Takedowns or rapid response things, are deliberately watching for and stopping anyone who might try to smash a window or set a trash can on fire. They learned something from the protests after George Floyd’s death and the coverage thereof.

    For a while last year some Internet leftists were Big Mad about this but the people actually doing the work didn’t care what they thought.

      I’ve seen a lot of posts from afar to the effect of “Why aren’t people in Minneapolis / the US doing anything?? When will they take action???”

      …and, well, running with the metaphor from that thread, I guess maybe they’re looking at the top of the bread and wondering why it’s not golden brown already.

      I want you to know, I want the world to know: never in my life, not even after the murder of George Floyd, have I seen the amount of sustained daily action I’ve seen here these last few weeks.

      @inthehands
      It just proves: "Who controls the media controls the minds."(J.Morrison)
      There is a reason why media get bought/overtaken by Oligarchs (btw. everywhere)
      If you don't get to know about resistance anywhere you feel powerless. It then starts with wording, framing... up to open obvious lies/fakes...
      Another reason to keep promoting decentralised media like the fediverse.
      ...and to keep pushing famous people, journalism and officials rather leaving Oligarchcontrolled platforms.

            I only omit DC because I haven’t personally heard of people getting tips from organizers there. But I’m sure some here have! We love DC too!

            @inthehands @paul_ipv6 We have strong organization. I think maybe it’s a bit more underground here, though, as we don't have many of the protections citizens in states do, and our mayor seems to be acting like she wants to be appointed for the next term instead of being elected. There's definitely a lot going on here, though.

              @mwyman
              The problem with that is that it would open the doors to martial law, which is what Trump’s desperately been trying to foment.

                @bweller @mwyman I live in Minneapolis, and no, it is not already here. This is a dangerous misstatement.

                Right now, we have a bunch of meatheads who are basically Biff’s sidekicks from Back to the Future running around with tear gas and handguns and a sense of impunity — which is of course •extremely• dangerous. But we do not have tanks in the streets pointing their turrets at protestors. We do not have marines conducting abductions, or fighter jets bombing civilians.

                •That• is what the Trump admin wants. They’re trying (and so far failing) to create a context where that can actually happen.

                As bad as this is, it can get so so so much worse.

                    @bweller @mwyman
                    Note that they tried to get there by federalizing the National Guard, and that scheme crashed and burned: the NG wasn’t having it, the public fought it hard, and the courts smacked them down so hard they don’t know which way is up anymore.

                    They desperately need political cover for militarization, and they simply don’t have it yet. We need to make sure they don’t get it.

                      @inthehands @bweller @mwyman The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 specifically forbids deploying the military as civilian law enforcement. There are a few exceptions, but none of them apply to what's happening in Minnesota; ICE specifically caused the disruption that the administration is trying to use to justify the unlawful deployment. At this time, everything that Minnesota and its citizens are doing are reasonable acts of self-defense.

                      Whether that unlawful deployment constitutes treason is debatable, but it's surely an impeachable offense if Congress was capable of taking action and fulfilling their Constitutional duty to stop the continuous abuse of power.
