and maybe a well-connected kremlin douchebag in london

    etc., etc.

    1. you know they wont nuke paris or london

    2. if they suddenly go home you get notice shit's going up a notch

    (/half kidding, half 🤔 )

ah, fuck it, send them all home

    @benroyce
Putin's daughter used to live in Amsterdam, that is no longer the case. Amsterdam is however close enough to London and Paris to not be bombed, flattening the Dutch capital would also affect the British and French capitals.

maybe every european capital should detain someone important enough or related to someone important enough as an insurance policy

I am not an expert on Putin's daughter(s), my assumption is that it is probably the same person who just moved from one place to another.

People in the Kremlin know well that the last thing they do will be to drop a nuke somewhere.

All the threats about nuking Europe are solely meant for for internal consumption in Russia The Russian government understands very clearly that an uprise is developing. In order to temper the uprise they feed the Russian population a picture of a common enemy. These are the last gasps of a declining Russian regime. The only thing they have left is heavy repression.

Nearly 500,000 russian citizens enjoyed European holidays last year. Meanwhile, Ukrainians were dying on the battlefield.

It’s time to end Schengen tourist visas for russian tourists. Holidays in the EU are a privilege, not a right for citizens of a country waging war on our continent.

@EugeneMcParland@mastodon.ie I honestly would make this more nuanced than a blanket ban on ALL russian people... You might hate me for saying this, because I realise this is a heated topic, but as much as I hate Putin, the Russian military, and all high power peopme in Russia, I doubt the PEOPLE of Russia agree with killing Ukranians... The government of Russia is actively hostile to their people, and routinely violates their freedom, the actions of the russian government do not represent the russian people, and therefore I don't think we should punish them for something they have no say in. Russia is not a democracy as much as the Russian government wants to paint it as one.

Allowing visas for Russian people also makes it possible for people who are probably at risk to flee their country and seek political asylum in Europe, which is something that may encourage people who disagree with Putin's regime to speak up against it.

I would make a very big blacklist with all Russian oligarchs and anyone who has any relation with the russian government though, but I doubt this will go anywhere because it turns out those types of Russians are the ones bringing big money to Europe, and the others don't...

It is remarkable how many Russians live in European cities, especially Paris and London. Very wealthy Russians. Most of those are monetary rich but morally very poor. As far as I know they don't contribute anything to their local community. Maybe a handful do but in general they are more of a burden to the cities where they live.

Right, I don't think they would nuke. We have rational reasons why but then: "the assholes making the decisions, their families live in Europe" is the most hilariously direct argument

The Kremlin pushes so much "morally degenerate Westoids" propaganda, but then the families of the elites who lie to, rob and literally slaughter average Russians by sending them to die in Ukraine: they live in Europe

It's a giant farce. Average Russians need to wake up

This reminds me of the story of Vladimir Popov the 23 yo Russian who was eaten alive by a shark at a beach by an Egyptian resort in Hurghada. The attack was recorded live on video by witnesses, him screaming for his father and being thrashed around by the shark. He dodged conscription only to be eaten by shark.

@EugeneMcParland @wolf the moment you start taking it out on someone for something that they are and not something that they do you become the bad guy. you are not suggesting we should punish russians for supporting or tolerating a regime that does bad things, you are saying we should block all russians just because they are russians - that makes you a bigot.

Unbelievable that RuZZians still can get visa to freely roam around the EU.
This holiday energy should be conserved and then unloaded in demonstrations against the war.
                              IN RuZZia!
Plus, I do not think that the average RuZZian can afford traveling to the EU. More likely it's the wealthy few that profit from the system.
                              Keep them out.

I'm curious to understand how exactly that measure - a total refusal of visas for ALL Russians - would move the needle towards an end of that war. (I would be all for it if it helpens the cause.)

But instead it might even make things worse as it might make those who can no longer travel to the E.U. solidarise with Putin's regime.

Whereas the only hope for a change for the better in Russia is to increase the share of citizens who oppose the current regime.

Every Russian who is allowed to leave the country for a vacation abroad because he's not known as a supporter or a part of the regime gets in touch with information about that war that they have no access to in Russia. And they'll feel how Europeans think about it.

A change of mind for the better often starts with a clearer perspective of reality.

@EugeneMcParland With all due respect, does this stop Russian imperialist ideology? Does this attack Putin and his oligarchs? Does this aid those ravished by war crimes? Or is this just a pooh-pooh to civilians, to people who don't hold military power?

@EugeneMcParland meanwhile americans and israelis -- committing a genocide in front of the world - travel to many places. BAN THEM ALL.

But you want to ban *russian citizens* because their country is involved in YET ANOTHER US-backed proxy war with a 3rd party? Fucking state department tools.

You should watch this YouTube video from Vlad Vexler. " Why All russians Are Responsible for putin's War"

He uses Thomas Mann's brilliant meditations on Nazi Germany to help us start a conversation about how do humans take responsibility when they are not guilty of evil, but are associated with it.
