    @deborahh @SnowyCA @chu If the LCD TV was made in the last 18 years, it should be able to receive the digital TV signals.

    😄

    🤔 Is there some sort of "adapter" for older models?

    ( I don't have a tv, I'm just letting my mind roam into curious places)

      @SnowyCA @EdwinG @chu adapter for what-to-what?

      Edit: oh, I see. For older-than-18-yrs models, I guess. No idea.

        Edwin mentioned in order to pull in the signal, the tv had to be 18 or younger, but now that I think about it, I guess even if there was an "adapter" of sorts the tv wouldn't work.

          @SnowyCA @deborahh @chu The answer is yes, they do exist.

          They are called “ATSC Converter boxes” or digital-to-analog converter boxes.

          Almost every channel I know of ran an advert when did the analog (NTSC) to digital (ATSC) conversion in 2011, and mentioned them 😅

          Here’s a sample of those adverts for your viewing enjoyment:

          P.S.: I said 18 years because I’m sure those TV support digital signals, older LCDs might as well… I just don’t know.

            We were using a digital antenna with an OTA PVR that connected to the TV via HDMI but that's in storage now, as we've gone all ROKU or computer sourced TV, but that setup should work with any TV with an HDMI input

                        I use SiliconDust HDHomeRun, which put the TV signal onto your home’s network (cost me $120 back in 2011 IIRC)

                        Other brands do exist, most using USB.

                          @EdwinG @SnowyCA @chu huh. Looks like a "ATSC Converter box" costs about $20. And I wonder if I might have one already, in my stach of AV connectors …

                                  Not April fools.

                                  Here's a screw a tech bro for a week challenge

                                  1) don't make online purchases. Walk into a store or call /email a small business owner.

                                  2) no using any food delivery apps, call a local restaurant and pick it up. The tech companies take a huge cut and you'd be doing the local small biz a huge favour by doing this.

                                  3) no using Uber or Lyft. Call a cab if you need it

                                  4) don't use AI tools. If your employer threatens your job, give them the slop they deserve, but nothing outside of that.

                                  5) add in the comments anything else you think of.

                                  I honestly wonder how painful this list is for many people. Is a week doable or have they fundamentally taken control of us so hard we already lost our old systems of living?

                                  I still have an Amazon account, but I don't buy anything from it.
                                  I just use the wishlist as a way of keeping track of stuff I want to buy.

                                    @SnowyCA @deborahh @chu

                                    Usually, these are the channels I receive in my area of Montréal (7 of them, 2 USian, 1 Japanese):
                                    - CBC
                                    - Télé-Québec (Québec's TVontario)
                                    - NHK World
                                    - Noovo (French CTV)
                                    - PBS
                                    - PBS Kids
                                    - Ici Radio-Canada Télé

                                    And I'm not well placed to receive them 😆

                                      @EdwinG @SnowyCA @chu we also may get PBS. Which I would welcome (but I'd still avoid US news, except in the event of world-changing event.

                                        That's a better selection than this old Hollywood western ONE channel.😂
                                        Gunsmoke and Bonanza...I saw more than enough in my younger days thank you.
