"Groups" are a bit of a misnomer. They're more like hashtags that are moderated for content, spam, etc. Just copy and paste the handle in Mastodon and follow it like a user: https://about.fedigroups.social/directory

When first starting out, it can be more useful to follow hashtags and groups than people.

I don't know your interests, but here are some popular photography-related tags:

@cbattlegear I don’t have Mastodon for Android, but the easiest way to see other people from the same server (other forkers) is to look at the Local or Community timeline (they’re called different things on different apps).

According to my searches, you can find it on the official Mostodon app by going to Search/Community. You’ll see a stream of the local postings from there.
