So which VPN are we switching to?

    mullvad: fash
    Mozilla: resells mullvad
    nym: fash
    ExpressVPN/PIA: israeli military guys
Windscribe: openly transphobic on Twitter (someone here linked it), also sent out a newsletter with homophobic rape jokes like just the other day
    ivpn: freeze peach https://mastodon.art/@jase/116830652868816205
proton: turned over logs on someone, one of the c-suite donated to Trump
surfshark/nordvpn: same company, owned by an SEO/marketing outfit
purevpn: sketchy af floods play store with different vpn brands, security problem
    tortorguard.net: Cloudflare (the nazi proxi)
    obscura: partnered with mullvad

    riseup: runs on donations
njalla: only one connection / no selection of exits / seems like a vps basically. Probably great if you want one fixed ip, won't work if you want to hop servers/regions
    airvpn: ?
    hide.me: ? did an NFT in 2022
xeoveo: says trans rights, oppose facism

@gildilinie Well one problem with them is that they have no audits, which i admit is kinda bad because we can really only take their word for it. And also someone said something vague about the quality not being being great, but then others said it's nice.

@catraxx@tech.lgbt @gildilinie@beige.party i'm on airvpn now because it's one of the few that offers port forwarding

servers are sometimes really slow but they have a decent number of them. their apps are kind of bad and they make it annoying to download multiple configs but it works ok overall

i haven't looked into their business practices much tho

@gildilinie I'm also drawing a parallel between something TIL, that hackaday (which looks a little dated and janky) is owned by Siemens (although a recent acquisition as I understand it).

Still a professional service looking like it's running phpBB ... the flags ain't green over here.

@gildilinie I find this all disconcerting. I would trust Mullvad. I used to use there service and pay with cash and they always added the allotted time and then some.

@gildilinie But, getting your own VPS and running your own wireguard or tailscale vpn may be more of what you are looking for.

@gildilinie personally I use one on my router, one on my desktop and one in a vm plus tor if I am concerned about it.
