On #Greenland - a thread
At the moment, we cannot know what diplomatic discussions have been going on out of the public eye regarding Trump’s threats regarding taking over Greenland, but I have to say that I’m really, really disappointed with Denmark, Greenland and Europe’s responses.
Specifically because the one and only response should have been a unanimous: “Don’t be ridiculous.”
And that response should have been repetitively consistent across the board from every quarter.

Trump’s tactic has always been to throw up insane test spagghetti and see what sticks to the wall. The moment something sticks (i.e. someone responds to him like the idea is serious or has a shred of merit), he inches forward by increments.
The only insane ideas he abandons are those he is consistently and universally shamed for uttering. Because it is the one thing that terrorises him - looking stupid.

We are at the absolutely ludicrous point where Greenland and Denmark are engaging in serious talks with him regarding the possession of Greenland in response to a patently RIDICULOUS utterance on his part.
For all intents and purposes, the US already has had all the access to Greenland it would ever need UNDER NATO. And UNDER NATO there was never the remotest possibility of either China or Russia taking over Greenland.
He should have been forced to admit that his problem was with NATO.

@Remittancegirl I disagree! The governments of Denmark and Greenland have unequivocally stated that Greenland is NOT for sale and the Greenlandic people DO NOT want to be part of the U.S.
At the same time, we fully realize that Trump could decide to invade Greenland at any moment, so the calculus is that it is better to slow down the insane tempo and try to cool down the temperature on this by engaging in high-level talks, rather than communicating through social media.
Notice also that several European countries have now sent soldiers to Greenland to make it much less palatable to engage in a military invasion.
We are doing what we can in a very precarious situation. Please try to understand the difficulty of being a very small nation here. -

The response shouldn’t have been “Greenland isn’t for sale”. It should have been “Don’t be ridiculous, the US already has full access to Greenland for security purposes under NATO. You’re demanding something you already have.”

@Remittancegirl they have also said essentially that, but with less inflammatory vocabulary.
