Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?
-
@netbsd I wish you good luck finding an artist to make your artworks, and I salute your no AI policy for it! 🧡
Here is a little watercolor sketch freely inspired by your logo.
@davidrevoy @netbsd As I am not aware if you know about this software already. I am in the process of redoing all of my photography internet uploads with this software and thought you might be interested. It helps to protect your incredible art from being plagarized by "AI". The software is called Glaze.

https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/@atraidez @netbsd Yes, well aware (unfortunately), and I'll do the short version: it is a AI bro scam, boosted by a large (and successful) marketing effort. It was defeated on day 1, and now remain with a user base like a cult, especially appreciated from non technical user who are ready to believe in it because it sounds like the only "tech" option. But it doesn't work.
That's sad, I wish something like that would work, be open-source, would run on Linux, and be done by serious peoples.

We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!
Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

@atraidez @netbsd Sources: see Cara social network recent news, who had 12 millions of artworks scrapped three time on August by AI dataset. The 'Glaze' on a big part of them (it was a premium built-in service) changed nothing.
Computer effort, electricity for nothing.
The illusion of protection. Sadly. -
For the folks unacquainted with the @netbsd toaster (it was notably more red than pink), it's quite the piece of NetBSD lore

@gumnos @netbsd @mwl photo reminds me that I ran NetBSD on a cobalt Qube that I bought used. I still have two generations of Cobalt Qube in my closet somewhere. They were kind of a pain to work on but very cool hardware form factor for the time. (I was buying them used on eBay at least a decade after they discontinued them.)

@citadel9 Hehe, I just wanted a "tech" detail, showing she was using a digital object

Je vois puffy la mascotte de fish linux dans la palette à guache qui se trouve sur la gauche du dessin

@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org @atraidez@infosec.exchange I don't think it was intended as a scam; the original research behind it is logical, and its initial release was able to defeat the current state of image2image generators.
Unfortunately, it's fundamentally incapable of being a long-term solution to the problem; it doesn't matter if it can block all of the current LLMs, because as soon as even one person finds a way to defeat it, every image that had previously been glazed is effectively now completely unprotected, and this exact scenario has happened several times.
I think the developers behind it mostly just have a lot of hubris and think that they will be able to come up with an unbreakable solution if they try hard enough. (I am also a little biased because I tried to reach out to them about helping make a Linux port in the early days of it, and I was fairly rudely rejected) -
@skybert thank you!

@jack Cute mascot work, mostly.
@netbsd After thinking about this for a bit, my best concept is a cute little orange hermit crab that can be drawn with different “shells”, where each shell is the case from some sort of hardware. This captures NetBSD’s “can run on anything” philosophy of portability and gives you a nice way to specialize the mascot for different working groups in the community. To be a little cheeky/use the lore, the default shell could be a toaster

@davidrevoy @netbsd well fuck. The destruction continues. Thank you for the info update.

The illusion of protection. Sadly.@davidrevoy I recently read a @clarkesworld story about this. Didn't know it might be based on actual technology.
