Large parts of Europe are on fire - that is what needs immediate action. A gigafactory will hurt the environment massively.

The AI bubble will pop before any of these gigafactories are built. In the meantime all this money is wasted on far, far overpriced components.

c. Compute Performance Capacity
To qualify as an AIGF, the computational scale must at least reach three to four times the
number of advanced processors currently available in the most powerful AI Factories10 across
both deployment phases, depending on the targeted Lot:
• Compute Performance Capacity
o Lot 1 - Medium-Scale: The facility must deploy a minimum capacity of 25,000
(H100-equivalent) of the latest state-of-the-art AI advanced chips by Phase 1.
To qualify as a full-scale AIGF, the proposal must include a binding roadmap to
reach a total minimum capacity of at least 75,000 (H100-equivalent) of the latest
state-of-the-art AI chips in Phase 2. This element will be assessed in the
eligibility section.
o Lot 2 - Large-Scale: The facility must deploy a minimum capacity of 40,000
(H100-equivalent) of the latest state-of-the-art AI advanced chips by Phase 1.
To qualify as a massive full-scale AIGF, the proposal must include a binding
roadmap to reach a total minimum capacity of at least 100,000 (H100-equivalent) of latest state-of-the-art AI chips in Phase 2.

I want to applaud @HennaVirkkunen for posting here on what the EC is up to, even if many in the Fediverse are opposed to it. Like this AI Gigafactories plan.

Democracies only work if there are places where people can speak their minds and governments hear what they say. Without the potential manipulation of a self-interested commercial party in the middle.

Maybe the Fediverse can become such a place as European tech sovereignty projects progress and (hopefully!) more EU citizens participate.

I am a disabled person with very little energy, which is used for the most basic things in life... so adding organization things to my life it won't unfortunately work for me. (^_^)*

I also live a fairly isolated life and have very few "real life" contacts left, so "people around me" counts as me...and my partner.

If I had the energy, I would try to usher change. But my lot seems to be to just make it day to day.

From where?

For what purpose?

Where shall the resources be taken from?

We have laws to reduce the energy use on headlights on cars, because we need to conserve energy.

But 7 "AI data centers" is ok?

Who would want to invest in projects that have no viable way to make money?

Apart from the circular investments between the players in the AI circus turning this into an unsustainable bubble that must burst soon.

Unsustainable capitalism isn't ok, just because it is in Europe.

Politicians need to understand the practical implications of this. Not just fancy words by corporations eager to squeeze more money out of EU.
