A lot of people who are new to the Fediverse find the initial experience rather sparse, which might turn them off, and that's not entirely unreasonable.

It helps to follow a lot of accounts, but slightly less obvious is that you can follow #HashTags as well. That will populate your feed with any post that uses any of the hash tags you follow, and is a great way to discover people who post about things you care about.

No algorithm here - people only see what their friends boost in chronological order. Boost anything you want others to see, thumbs up to say a thank you to the person who posted it. Block the occasional idiot (there aren't many) and mute the ones who post too much for you.

3. Most people start on mastodon.social, but you'll probably have a better time if you find a smaller instance full of people you like and switch to it
