Google is under fire for clearing over 300 hectares — the equivalent of almost 500 football fields — for two new data centers in the northern part of Finland without concluding the necessary environmental assessments

Unfortunately our entire government and the president loves the current leadership in the USA (which some might say includes Alphabet), it’s only two or three opposition parties making noise about it here. Google has promised nearby townspeople something equivalent of one free ice cream cone each as spiritual reparations (I don’t remember what it was but it was small and silly, insubstantial.)

Despite the assessments still being in progress, the tech giant’s contractors started clearing trees in the area months ago, raising the alarm bells at the Finnish Nature Conservation Association.https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/google-accused-illegally-killing-forest-data-center
Fucking American Tech Oligarchs. Ugh. Spreading their cancer everywhere.

@cdarwin They'd want power and water as well of course, so that's more damage to come if they're not stopped.
@foolishowl @cdarwin They should be prevently forced to restore all the forest they have illegally destructed. When it grows again, then the environmental assessment can resume. When it concludes, then there can be an official decision of whether they are allowed again to wipe this area to build their datacenters or not.

@cdarwin Google is venom and venom should be killed. Where necessary with brute force. Start legal and sabotage actions now.

@cdarwin that is fine, take the land back off of them, don't refund what they paid for it, plant new trees and maybe they'll follow the procedure next time. Unless there is real punishment every single company will do this knowing they can get away with it. Maybe throw in a $1B USD fine as well.

@cdarwin If they do this in Finland, one can only imagine what they do in other places with weaker civil and democratic controls.
